Man on the Moon III is the upcoming sixth studio album by American recording artist Kid Cudi. The album is scheduled to be released sometime in 2015, through Republic Records and Cudi's Wicked Awesome Records imprint. The album will conclude the trilogy in the Man on the Moon series, which was preceded by Man on the Moon: The End of Day (2009) and Man on the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager (2010).

Background

"You’ll see it coming from a person who is looking at things from a more mature mindset, with more understanding and growth. I want people to be able to put this album on at different points in their lives and grow with me. This series was meant to show me grow as a man and it would not be right to do MOTM III and have me talking about driving drunk. I didn’t want people to listen and feel like, “Oh he’s giving us a lesson,” rather than be entertained, but I’m not condoning that shit, that’s not cool. When I’m singing about driving drunk on “Pursuit of Happiness” on MOTM, you may remember that it was a nightmare. It was meant to be scary, the craziness, the fact that this person chooses to look for happiness in substances; and that’s scary, that’s a terrible combination, that’s a terrible way to go about things."

— In a November 2013 interview with Music Connection, Cudi spoke on the growth in the Man on the Moon series.[2]

Kid Cudi first revealed information about the project on November 30, 2011, when he stated on his official Twitter account that he had received new beats from American songwriter and producer Jean-Baptiste,[3] who previously produced the songs "Up, Up & Away" and "Heart of a Lion", from Cudi's debut album Man on the Moon: The End of Day (2009). Cudi then went on to state all three Man on the Moon albums were designed to be played back to back, for a seamless experience and that he would be asking former GOOD Music label-mate Common to narrate the album, as he did on the first.[4][5]

The album was originally set for a late 2012 or early 2013 release date, however several other projects would arise, such as his formation of alternative rock duo WZRD, alongside frequent collaborator, Dot da Genius. Shortly after the release of WZRD's eponymously-titled debut album, in February 2012, Cudi went on Twitter and vented his frustrations with his label Republic Records, for only shipping 55,000 copies of the album. Cudi also declared since they were rushing him to complete WZRD, in retaliation he would hold off on releasing Man on the Moon III, until 2014.[6] On July 25, 2013, during a Q&A with his fans via Twitter, Cudi confirmed that the final installment of the Man on the Moon series would be released sometime in 2015 and that longtime producers Plain Pat and Emile Haynie, would be returning to assist in the production of the album.[7][8][9] On August 19, 2013, Cudi tweeted: "motm 3 2015".[10]

On November 10, 2013, in an interview with music-trade magazine Music Connection, Cudi revealed "MOTM III will really be answering the biggest question: Have I found happiness? And it will lead people on in life, because there will not be another MOTM after MOTM III. It will send people off feeling satisfied." [11] During the same interview, Cudi stated "Man on the Moon III will show a whole other level of maturity, and it will answer a whole lot of questions. There’s a lot of missing links between MOTM and MOTM II. I also think that they were both very ignorant albums, so I think I’ll eliminate a lot of that ignorance. [12]

On February 25, 2014, Kid Cudi unexpectedly released his fourth album Satellite Flight: The Journey to Mother Moon, via digital retailers. A month earlier Cudi tweeted: "Satellite Flight: The Journey To Mother Moon is the bridge between INDICUD and MOTM3. An experience 6 years in the making."[13] He also proclaimed Satellite Flight would serve as a prelude to Man on the Moon III[14][15][16]

On January 20, 2015, Kid Cudi put an end to rumors about whether or not longtime collaborators Emile Haynie and Plain Pat, would be returning for the final installment of the Man on the Moon series, by tweeting a picture of himself in a studio with Haynie, followed by tweets confirming both of their involvement, along with A-Trak and longtime friend Dot da Genius.[17]

Recording and production

On January 20, 2015, Kid Cudi gave fans an update on the album and said he wouldn't be able to start working on it without Emile Haynie, Plain Pat, A-Trak and Dot da Genius involved. Plain Pat and A-Trak had already confirmed they are ready to start working on the album. On January 21, Cudi shared a photo of him and Emile Haynie in the studio, via Twitter. This core group helped shape Cudi's first two albums in the Man On the Moon series.[18] Kid Cudi also expressed that he wants to get in the studio with MGMT and Ratatat as well. On March 16, Cudi gave another update with a picture on Twitter with Plain Pat in the studio working on the album.

Release and promotion

On March 3, 2015, Kid Cudi officially released his first song since his album Satellite Flight, was put on the market. The song, which is titled "Love", was originally recorded for Satellite Flight and samples Ratatat's "Sunblocks". "Love" went on to receive positive reviews.[19][20]
