Malky McDonald

Malky McDonald (26 October 1913 1999) was a Scottish football player and manager.[1][2]

McDonald played for Celtic during the 1930s. He represented the Scottish League once, in 1941[3] and played three times for Scotland in wartime internationals.[4] He signed for Kilmarnock during the Second World War, initially on loan.[1] He moved to English football for a few years, playing for Brentford, but returned to Kilmarnock as manager.[1] He managed the club in two spells, either side of the tenure of Willie Waddell.[2] In his second spell, he guided Kilmarnock to the semi-final of the 1966–67 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, where they lost to Leeds United.[2][5] McDonald was caretaker manager of the Scotland national football team for two games in 1966.

Despite the disappointment of failing to become the first Scottish side to reach the final of a major European trophy, Malky McDonald's Killie managed to defeat Royal Antwerp of Belgium 8-2 on aggregate and La Gantoise of Ghent 3-1 along the way, before Don Revie's men booked their ultimately doomed place in the finals against Dynamo Zagreb.
