Presidential elections were held in Mali on 11 May 1997. They were boycotted by the main opposition parties, and as a result featured only two candidates; incumbent president Alpha Oumar Konaré of the Alliance for Democracy in Mali and Mamadou Diaby of the Party for Unity, Democracy and Progress, although several other candidates received votes. The result was a victory for Konaré, who won 84.4% of the vote, although turnout was just 29.0%.[1]
