Malek Shafi’i (Persian: ملک شفیعی‎) is a film director, festival organizer and human rights activist.

Biography

Malek Shafi’i has been making documentary films in Afghanistan and abroad for the last 13 years. He completed his education at Baagh Ferdaws Islamic Filmmaking Center in 1999 in Tehran and additionally attended a film production course in the Netherlands. Coming to Afghanistan after 20 years of exile, he has been living in Kabul for the past ten years. He founded Afghanistan Cinema Club – BASA Film in 2006. He also worked as a senior advisor for the Radio Television of Afghanistan. He has made about 30 films. Some of them won international film awards from different international film festivals. Shafi’i was a Jury member of the Tolo TV Film Festival, Kabul Film Festival, Amnesty Award of CPH-DOX (Copenhagen Documentary Film Festival), category judge of BANFF and ADB My View Video competition. Shafi'i is founder and director of Autumn Human Rights Film Festival. He also organized the second and third editions of the Kabul International Documentary and Short Film Festival; and Second Take - a film festival with a principal focus on gender and cinema. Now he is funder of Afghanistan Human Rights Film Festival. In 2011 he graduated from Kateb Higher education Institute on Sociology .

A group of filmmakers intend to travel to the farthest region of Afghanistan "Wakhan district of Badakhshan province" on the pretext of election. They pass from Faiz Abad and Eshkashem paths and as for as reaching to Wakhan take film from the people lives in the elections day. In spite of an unprecedented snow in the Election Day, people participate in election days. The elections take place in a complete security and the filmmaker group return on their feet.

Despite their many duties, which each of the six female Afghan members of parliament have in their private lives as wives, mothers and daughters, they do attempt to live up to their responsibility for society both within and outside of parliament in a traditional and male-dominated environment. Since the women are not acknowledged a position in society, they must first assert it.

In 2009, the Afghan Parliament approved the Shia Family Law, which was then signed by President Karzai. The law severely restricted women’s freedom, making it illegal for them to exit the house without their husband’s consent or resisting to their husband’s sexual demands. The Afghan women who were against this law, gathered and protested in front of Afghanistan’s biggest religious school where the law was written with support from Sheikh Asif Mohsini (an Islamic scholar and the founder of the school). The protests turned violent as the students of the school began humiliating the women protestors by beating, spitting, and labeling them as “Western followers”. This was one of the first major movements by women for their rights. This seemed to be the right time to visit other provinces to learn about the concerns and challenges of the educated Afghan women and their hopes and expectations from women movements. Muhtarama is mainly about the educated Afghan women and their common concerns that ranges from lack of political and social rights to domestic violence and troubled married lives to street harassment.

Festival organizer

AHRF is an international film festival focusing on the subject of human rights. It aims to encourage film makers who use their cameras to document struggles against discrimination, injustice and violence.

We have been working towards this festival since 2009 and we are delighted that the first Human Rights Film Festival held in Kabul on 1–7 October 2011.

The festival is being organised by the Afghanistan Cinema Club with the support of various national and international organizations. It aims to be a hub for film makers and artists working despite of censorship in their countries and whose works are restricted from public screenings.

The AHRF is a platform to share the works of film makers and artists who have unfortunately been marginalized by the authority. It will present stories of lives affected by war, discrimination and injustice. These stories are of people who have resisted oppression and fought against violence to create a more humane world.

AHRF invites entries to the festival. The entries can be documentary, feature film, short film, animation or video art on the subject of human rights.
