Malam Sambat Kaban (born August 5, 1958 in Binjai) was the forestry minister of Indonesia from 2004-2009. On May 1, 2005, he was appointed as the chairman of the Crescent Star Party (PBB).
Biography
Kaban is the son of the S. Tarigan, a housewife, and the late A.M. Kaban, a merchant. He is married to Nurmala Dewi, and has seven children. Kaban is known as a member of the House of Representatives, and one of the Crescent Star Party officials before being appointed President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono became Forestry Minister. In addition, he has been involved in human resource development in the Jakarta Public Relations, and examine the potential of plunging the economy of the Gunung Leuser National Park in 1992. He is also Chairman of the Economic Potential Weak research team in 1993, and a young researcher at the Child Exploitation Strategy assessment study of the Joint Venture Company Pertamina in 1994. As someone who spirited fighters, when they were young Ka'ban fight for this nation through the organization of the Islamic Students Association (HMI) which he had become chairman of HMI Jakarta. Politics
When the reforms rolling in 1998 he decided to enter the world of politics before the 1997 elections he got proposed by the United Development Party as for candidates from West Java who chaired by Ismail Metareum. But at that time Kaban not thought to enter the political world which is still its president Soeharto. Initial period of reform occurred with Yusril Ihza Mahendra form the Crescent Star Party, which posses principal on Islamic law, Yusril chaired at the time. Kaban initially reluctant to become secretary general of the Crescent Star Party because he felt there has been no experience. However, after receiving a request from Anwar Haryono (late), which is considered a parent message, finally Kaban willing to accept as secretary general.
