Maktab Sains Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan (English: Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College), also known as MSPSBS, Maktab Sains or simply MS, is a secondary school in Brunei Darussalam. It is named after the 28th Sultan of Brunei, Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien III. To gain admission to the school, students must earn straight A's in their Penilaian Sekolah Rendah (PSR).
The school takes pride in its academic performance in the country, especially in the science stream. The school takes active part in international as well as national science competitions such as the Australian National Chemistry Quiz as well as the University of Toronto National Biology Competition.[1] The school has also been known to be active in extracurricular activities. It has won several competitions such as the Creativity, Enrichment and Research Development for Advanced Students (CERDAS) Project held by the Ministry of Education.[2]
Many of the members of the Brunei's royal family attended Maktab Sains. HRH Prince Prince Abdul Mateen received his secondary education at the school. The wife of the Crown Prince of Brunei, HRH Pengiran Anak Sarah, was also educated at the school before graduating in 2005.
The school is located on Jalan Muara, in close proximity to the Brunei International Airport, a shopping complex and two other secondary schools- Sekolah Menengah Berakas and Maktab Teknik Sultan Saiful Rijal.
History
Maktab Sains Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan began as Sekolah Menengah Melayu Pertama (First Malay Secondary School) in Brunei Town in 1966. Upper secondary level (Form 4) was introduced in the school in 1967 while Sixth Form classes were introduced two years later. In 1969, the school moved from Brunei Town to Jalan Muara.
On 23 September 1971 Sekolah Menengah Melayu Pertama was officially renamed as Maktab Melayu Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan (Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Malay College). It was inaugurated by Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien III, the 28th Sultan of Brunei.
Bilingual education policy was implemented in 1974 and English medium classes was introduced. Two years later science education was started. The school was then again renamed as Maktab Melayu Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan/Sekolah Sains ( Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Malay College/Science School). Hostel facilities for both boys and girls were provided.
In 1985, the status of the school was raised to that of a college to acknowledge the inclusion of the Sixth Form. With this, the school was again renamed as Maktab Sains Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan (Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College).
The students population of the school increased and the campus needed renovation to accommodate the growing population. In 1994, the college moved to a new campus in Kampong Rimba, Gadong. The old campus was renovated and on 2 April 2005, 11 years after, the college moved back to its old site. Since 2007, the Form 1 (now known as Year 7) students were scheduled in the afternoon session due to a shortage of classrooms. In 2008, Year 8 students were also scheduled in the afternoon session. Year 7 students in 2008 were the first batch to try out the scheme of work for SPN21 (Sistem Pendidikan Negara Abad Ke-21).
