"Main Rang Sharbaton Ka" (English: I’m the colour of the sharbat) is a romantic Hindi song from the 2013 Bollywood film, Phata Poster Nikhla Hero. Composed by Pritam Chakraborty, the song is sung by Atif Aslam and Chinmayi, with lyrics penned by Irshad Kamil.[1][2] The soundtrack of the album consists a reprise version of the song rendered by Arijit Singh.[3] The music video of the track features actors Shahid Kapoor and Ileana D'Cruz.[4]

Background

The song is rendered by Atif Aslam and Chinmayi. Aslam had previously sung for the actor Shahid Kapoor in "Bakhuda Tumhi Ho" from Kismat Konnection (2008).[5] Chinmayi provided vocals for Ileana D'Cruz. In the song, Illeana is seen in a range of costumes; a total of seven.[6] The song is shot in Cape Town and a part of the song is picturised in Victoria Wharf.[7] The background of the song is kept colourful, decorated with kaleidoscopic colours, which goes according to the theme of the song.[6][7]

The song is mixed and mastered by Eric Pillai.[8] It is composed by Pritam. Maracas is used throughout the song and mild guitar with percussion instrument were also used in the composition of the song.[9] The tune of the song is layered with orchestra and the composition is kept simple.[10]

Release and response

The music video of the song was officially released on 26 August 2013, through the YouTube channel of Tips Music.[8][11] It was later released as a single on 29 August 2013.[2] The song along with other tracks in the album were available on music-streaming platforms and for digital download on 10 September 2013.[12]

The song was ranked at position 19 in "Radio Mirchi's Top 20 Bollywood songs of 2013" published by The Times of India.[13] The song was also positioned at 5 in "Times poll – 13 Best romantic songs" published by The Times of India.[14] Apart from the positive response, the song was also placed in "20 Ridiculous Songs of 2013 That We Can't Stop Humming" published by Ankush Bahuguna in MensXP.com.[15]

Chart performance

On 10 September 2013, the song entered "iTunes Indian Top 100 Charts" at position 46,[16] reached the top position on 25 September 2013,[17] and attained the position for a total of seven times.[18] The song was ranked at position 13 in "iTunes Mauritian Top 100 Charts" on 12 October 2013.[19]

The song had a direct entry at position 4 in The Times of India Mirchi Top 20 Chart on 4 October 2014,[20] sustained the position for further two weeks,[21] before falling to position 6 on 24 October 2013.[22] It also entered Planet Bollywood Top 10 Popular Songs chart at position 2 on 12 September 2013, and was described as a "beautiful melodious number that defines the trademark style of the composer".[23] It topped the chart on 21 September 2013,[24] before falling to position 3 on 12 October 2013.[25]

Critical reception

The song received mostly favourable reviews from music critics.

The Times of India's Bryan Durham picked the track as the best song from the album and felt that everything about the song is 'pitch-perfect'.[26] Joginder Tuteja of Rediff.com felt that the simplicity in the tune of the song and the vocals by Aslam and Chinmayi is what hooks the listener in the song.[27] Sankhayan Ghosh of The Indian Express commented: "To give credit where it's due, the hook line is melodic, but the rest sounds too formulaic to leave a lasting impression", adding that the song resembles of "Tera Hone Laga Hoon" from Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani.[28]

Mitesh Saraf from Planet Bollywood wrote: "The song has Pritam written all over it, from the chorus to the melody to arrangements. Atif is at his usual best although I don't understand why his voice has been auto tuned; Chinmayi's voice is so delicate that it melts one's heart right away. The lyrics to say the least are delicious".[29] Rafat from Glamsham found the antara of the song similar to the tune of "Teri Tasveer Mil Gayee" from Betaab (1983) and further added that the lyrics are very unique and effectively convey the romance between the leads.[30] Mohar Basu of Koimoi thought that Atif Aslam and Chinmayi did a spectacular job, but criticised the song for having a 'flimsy feel' to it.[31]

Reprise Version

A reprise version of the song was included in the soundtrack, composed and written by Pritam and Irshad Kamil respectively. The version is sung by Arijit Singh. It was released along with other tracks in the soundtrack of the album on 10 September 2013.[12] The version has the same composition as of the original but a slight change in lyrics in the second antara.[29]

On 25 September 2013, the song was placed at position 28 in the "iTunes Indian Top 100 chart".[32] It was also positioned at 33 in the "iTunes Mauritian Top 100 chart" on 11 October 2013.[33]

Critical reception

The version received mixed response from music critics.

Mohar Basu of Koimoi thought the version is surprisingly much better than the original version,[31] though The Times of India's Bryan Durham found the version 'pale' compare to the original.[26] Joginder Tuteja of Rediff.com found the sole male version of the song by Singh, equally 'good'.[27] Sankhayan Ghosh of The Indian Express commented: "Here, Arijit definitely betters it making it a much more pleasant listen than Aslam's labored vocals.[28] Rafat from Glamsham found Singh 'good' in his rendition but preferred Aslam's version over Singh's.[30] Mitesh Saraf from Planet Bollywood wrote: "If the two versions would be compared, then Atif's voice certainly rules over Arijit but as a Reprise version it does pretty well where Singh brings his own sweetness, style and charm to the composition and that is really commendable".[29]
