Coordinates: 23°01′45″N 72°34′0″E / 23.02917°N 72.56667°E Mahatma Gandhi International School (MGIS) in Mithakali, Ahmedabad, India, is the first authorized IB World School in Gujarat, having obtained that status in November 2002.[1] Another school in the city, Ahmedabad International School, became an IB World School in November 2003.[2] MGIS is also registered with the University of Cambridge International Examinations.[3] The school enrolls approximately 200 students from the local community as well as expatriate children.[4]

History

The school is a Public-Private Partnership. It was established in 1998 by the educationalists, Pascal Chazot and Anju Musafir in collaboration with the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation.[5] The building in which the school is located was donated by Sheth Motilal Hirabhai, the family of Dr. Bihari Kanhaiyalal[6] The school is authorised to offer the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme since November 2002 and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme since March 2005.[7]

Academics and extra-curricular activities

The school follows the Cambridge International Primary Programme for classes 1-5, the IB MYP Programme for classes 6-10 and the IB Diploma Programme for classes 11-12.[8] The school offers Hindi and French as a second language to its students in the Diploma programme.[9] The school has links with other international schools in the world such as L'Ecole Aujourd'hui and Lycée Saint Germain en Laye from Paris and Mercedes College from Adelaide.[10][11][12]

MGIS was the first school in Ahmedabad to have males and females in the football team which was able to defeat several other teams.[13][14] Students have been selected to represent Gujarat at state level.[15] MGIS students have also participated in Karate tournaments, winning medals at the National Karate Championship held in Mumbai in 2008. There was also an a tournament in 2011 which made MGIS proud by winning at state level. It was held in Goa and 6 students participated (Jatin, Jay, Mahek, Sahil, Akshat and Rohan).[16] There are 12 classrooms in the school. There are no exams until 10th grade and there are no uniforms. It has activity based teaching. There are no punishments either. There is an Amul cafe in which you can by Amul products with a coupon which subtracts the amount of money which the product costs from 200 rupees or 400 rupees. There are 2 available coupons, one is 200 rupees and the other one, 400 rupees.[17]
