Magoun Square
Magoun Square is a neighborhood of Somerville, Massachusetts located at the intersection of two major streets, Broadway and Medford Street. Magoun Square was named after the family of John Calvin Magoun (1797 - 1882)[1] of the Adams-Magoun House. Magoun was the local Assessor for twenty-eight years and was Captain in the militia at the time of the visit by the Marquis de Lafayette in 1826.[2]
It is a mixed-use urban business district that is currently experiencing an economic improvement thanks to new businesses and the efforts of elected officials, business owners, residents and patrons.
The Green Line (MBTA) Somerville-Medford extension has a proposed stop immediately west of the commercial district, in Ball Square and immediately south of the commercial district on Lowell Street. Both of these are slated to be "passenger-ready" by 2018 according to a recently published timeline by MassDOT. Phase one of this project has already begun with construction on existing bridges in both Medford and Somerville.
$3.1M to improve the safety and accessibility of the crash prone intersection was requested under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The project is currently underway and is expected to be completed in the Spring of 2013.[3]
