Made in Leeds is a local television station based in Leeds. It broadcasts to over 3 million people, covering Leeds and much of West Yorkshire including the surrounding areas of Wakefield, Dewsbury, Halifax and Huddersfield.

Made in Leeds started broadcasting on Freeview channel 8 and Virgin Media channel 159 on 6 November 2014,[1] and launched on Sky channel 117 on 24 November.[2]

History

In May 2012, media regulator Ofcom extended the invitation for local operators in cities across the United Kingdom to operate a new local television service in their area.[3]

In February 2013 Ofcom announced that Made in Leeds had won the licence to operate the local TV service for the Leeds area to be broadcast on Channel 8.[4] It is set to become one of nineteen new stations to launch across the country in 2014.[5]

Made in Leeds is part of the Made Television network, which also launched channels in Bristol, Cardiff and Tyne and Wear in 2014.

Programming

Made in Leeds broadcasts 24 hours a day with a wide range of programming, including news, current affairs, entertainment, culture, sports, property and cookery among its key programming strands.[6]

The station broadcasts a news bulletin at 6pm every weekday called On The Aire, followed by a nightly magazine show on local life, entertainment, arts and human interest stories hosted by Leanne Megson and Mark O'Brien.

The station works with production partners across the region on new programming ideas.[7]

Studios

Made in Leeds is based at the Leeds Media & Broadcasting Centre on Savile Mount just off Chapeltown Road, Chapeltown.[8] The building was once the home of the Leeds Jewish Institute, then becoming a local trades club before it was renovated and reopened in the 2000s as a centre for local artists and media companies.[9]

Made in Leeds journalists and producers operate from a purpose-built newsroom inside the building. Some programmes are shot in its state-of-the-art television studio and music recording facilities.
