Madarosis is the absence or loss of the eyelashes (and sometimes the eyebrows), either as a congenital condition or as a result of an infection.E.g. Leprosy,alopecia totalis etc.
Madarosis is the absence of eyelashes and in severe cases eyebrows. It can be caused by infection or malignant neoplasms.
Causes
Local causes:
- chronic disease of the frontal eyelid lips
- infiltrating tumors
- burns
- radiotherapy of cryotherapy of local tumors
Skin conditions:
- Generalised alopecia
- Psoriasis
Systemic Causes
- Myxoedema ( hypothyroidism )
- Systemic lupus erythematosus
- Syphilis
- Leprosy
Other
- Iatrogenic (e.g. after excision)
- Trichotilomania
- Trachoma
