The airport is owned by Mackinac Island State Park Commission.[1] It is included in the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2011–2015, which categorized it as a general aviation facility.[2]

Mackinac Island Airport started as a grass strip in 1934. It got a paved runway in 1963 and a terminal building in 1969.[3] A $4.6 million project in 2012 moved the runway 65 feet east to a flatter location.
