Machang Bubok is a small town in Penang, Malaysia, near the town of Bukit Mertajam in the west and the Kedah state border in the east. The place is named after Kampung Machang Bubok which is a nearby village of the same name. In recent years, there were housing developments such as Taman Machang Bubok and Taman Remia, resulting in the town being absorbed into the Bukit Mertajam proper. The state seat of Machang Bubok is within the Parliament seat of Bukit Mertajam.
Many residents in this town are engaging in agriculture. Palm oil, durian, banana and rubber trees are cultivated in this town. There are also residents who grow vegetables in their own garden plot and sell them directly in the market which is located in Jalan Kedua (Second Road).
As of date November 2011, the Machang Bubok village has 2134 people and 85% of the population consists of Chinese. About 12% of them are Malays and less than 3% are Indians. The major language spoken in this village is Hakka. This village has about 421 houses. Many city dwellers visit this village during holidays and festive seasons because the air is fresher and the food is delicious and inexpensive.[1]
History
Machang Bubok was a farming settlement which is one of the 450 new villages remaining in the country. Similar to the rest of the new villages, it was developed during the Malayan Emergency period by the British colonial government in 1952 to resettle the Chinese people to avoid contact with any members of the Communist Party of Malaya (CPM). In the past, farming was the main economy of the village, but then it has changed to rubber plantation.[1]
Infrastructure
Machang Bubok has a police station, a fire station, a community hall and a recreational field. The police station is located on Jalan Machang Bubok close to the residential area. The fire station is run by volunteers in the village.
