MICappella is a Singaporean a cappella group signed under S2S Pte. Ltd.. The group made their debut after competing a Chinese competition called The Sing-Off, which is a X-Factor-style competition for strictly a cappella groups, where they won second place.[1]
History
2009 to 2012: Pre-debut
Formed in 2009, the group with only half of the members being full time musicians and has performed at prolific events like the Singapore E-Awards 2011 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium and the Singapore Youth Olympics 2010.[2] The band also represented Singapore at Taiwan's premier singing competition Super Idol 5 in 2011 and was the only South-East Asian group invited to perform alongside Singer-songwriter Khalil Fong during the Hong Kong International A Cappella Extravaganza 2010. In 2013 the band graced the stage of many international festivals like SoJam (USA), AMC Live! rock on (Chengdu, PRC) & Fringe Arts festival (Shenzhen, PRC) and Strawberry Festival (Beijing & Shanghai).[3]
2013 to 2014: Debut album, contract and China tour
The group was signed to local record label S2S Pte. Ltd. in January 2013, and released their debut album Here We Go, which consists two original songs "Here We Go" and "算了吧" on 16 April 2013.[4]
On 31 May 2013, MICappella held a sold-out concert <Late Nite @ Esplanade: MICappella – Here We Go> at Esplanade Recital Studio. During Singapore Hit Awards 2013, MICappella won the award of "Local Media Nominated Singer".
On 11 October 2014, MICappella was the guest performer for Hong Kong Singer Khalil Fong's Singapore <Soulboy Lights Up> concert. MICappella then started touring China, with their first stop at Shanghai Daning Music Festival on 19 October 2014. Soon after, MICappella was recommended by Singapore Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean to perform at <The Art Performance for the 20th Anniversary of China Singapore Cooperative Suzhou Industrial Park> as Singaporean representatives on 26 October 2014, and the band actively toured the region.
2014 to 2015: Line-up changes, European tour
In late 2014, YK Teng left the band, and was replaced with photographer-singer Goh Mingwei. On January 2015, Lee Ein Ein left to study music in Los Angeles. She was replaced with Tay Kexin, younger sister of Tay Kewei. It was also announced that the band would embark on its European tour, perform in countries like the UK, Germany and Holland.[5]
