M. Craig Barnes

M. Craig Barnes (born 1955 or 1956) is a Presbyterian Church (USA) clergyman and author. In 2013, was installed as president of Princeton Theological Seminary.

Biography and Career

Barnes was raised on Long Island,[1] and attended The King's College in New York City, where he graduated with a major in history in 1978.[2] He went on to graduate from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1981 with an M.Div., and he earned a Ph.D. in Church History from the University of Chicago Divinity School in 1992,[3] under the supervision of Martin Marty.[4]

In 1981, Barnes was ordained as a minister in the PC(USA), serving in PC(USA) congregations in Colorado Springs, CO and Madison, WI. In 1993, he became senior pastor of National Presbyterian Church in Washington, D.C., serving until 2002, when he took a call as senior pastor of Shadyside Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh, PA. While serving at Shadyside, he also was the Robert Meneilly Professor of Pastoral Ministry at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary.[5]

On October 8, 2012, Princeton Seminary announced that Barnes was selected to succeed the retiring Iain Torrance as president.[6] Barnes took up his duties as president on January 1, 2013 and was formally installed as president on October 23, 2013.[7]

Barnes is married and has a grown daughter and two teenage sons.[8]
