Lumphini Park (also Lumpini or Lumpinee, Thai: สวนลุมพินี) is a 360-rai (57.6-hectare (142-acre)) park in Bangkok, Thailand. This park offers rare open public space, trees and playgrounds in the Thai capital and contains an artificial lake where visitors can rent a variety of boats. Paths around the park totalling approximately 2.5 km in length are a popular area for evening joggers. Officially, cycling is only permitted during the day between the times of 10am to 3pm. There is a smoking ban throughout the park, and dogs are not allowed.

Lumphini Park is the plentiful park full of florae and many kinds of birds,located in center of Bangkok. Many public transport are pass here such as the bus, MRT and BTS. Lumpini Park is clean because it have good integrated solid waste management. There are many bins in many place and they have those bins are classify into many types such as; Recycling bin, special waste bin and general waste bin to protect the environment. Furthermore, Lumpini Park has many food and drink shops. Most people decide Lumpini Park as a resting place before they back home in the evening. Therefore, Lumpini Park is famous in general,especially on weekends.


History

Lumpini Park was created in the 1920s by King Rama VI on royal property.This place was a museum, where many products and natural resources were shown, then after World War 1, it was rebuilt into the first park in Bangkok.[1] A statue of the king stands at the southwestern entrance to the park. It was named after Lumbini, the birthplace of the Buddha in Nepal, and at the time of its creation stood on the outskirts of the city.

Today it lies in the heart of the main business district and is in the Lumphini sub-district, on the north side of Rama IV Road, between Ratchadamri Road and Witthayu Road.

Places in Lumphini Park

Lumpini Park is a multi-purpose park. Many activities are provided for citizens and tourists. The park is a green area. There are a lot of trees, beautiful flowers, large lakes, and various type of animals.

The statue of King Rama 6 was built in 1942 to commemorate the construction of the Lumpini Park.

Lumpini Park is a rich source of natural food and many large trees so it has become home for various species of birds. There are more than 30 species of birds approximately. Bird watching Courses are available at Lumpini Park every year.

Smiling Sun Ground is a place for activities designed for disabled people. It is full of resources and special parking lots for the disabled as well as playgrounds for children.

Bangkok Elder Citizens Club is a place for the elders to communicate, relax, exercise, and train. It is open from 8 AM to 6 PM daily. The dancing Courses are available every Sunday-Saturday.

Home of hope is a place for homeless children. They provide information, advice, and education to help homeless children. It is open 10 AM to 7 PM daily.

BMA Apprentice School offer training in various jobs including computer, cooking, tailor, and facial make-up.

Lumpini Park Library provides books and videos for studying. Open from 8 AM to 8 PM, on Tuesday-Sunday.

Lumpini Youth Center offering sports activities and sports equipment for members. Sports activities including soccer, swimming, basketball, and dancing. On Monday to Friday it is opened from 6 PM to 8 PM, On Saturday to Sunday it is open from 10 AM to 6 PM.

Sri Thai Derm food center is opened from 4:30 AM to 10 AM daily.

Paddle boats can be rented at a lake for a rate of 30 baht per 30 minutes.

Buddhist Dharma activities with Buddhist monks are held the last Sunday of every month from 7 AM to 9 AM.

A western music and Thai music festival in the park is held during February to April, every Sunday from 4:30 PM to 8 PM.

Has many play things in the playground such as slide, seesaw board, swing etc.

Lumpini Park has a big platform that has many exercise devices for people to come to exercise. Moreover this park is very shady and is famous for families, couples, seniors and new students to do activotoes together. For instance, badminton, tennis, jogging, riding bikes, education tours and do others activities togrther. Moreover Lumpini Park is an entertainment place for citizens and association to meet and converse. Elders like to play chess, sing the songs and play chinese boxing game together.

Venues and events

It has Bangkok's first public library and dance hall. During winter time, the Palm Garden of Lumphini Park becomes the site for the annual Concert in the Park festival featuring classical music by the Bangkok Symphony Orchestra and other bands.In World War 2 around 1942-1944, the park became a camp for Japanese Army.

Political Rallies

Lumphini Park has been used as rally ground for political mass gatherings.

In 2006 the People's Alliance for Democracy protested in the park against prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

In 2013/14 the park became on of the main protest sites of the People's Democratic Reform Committee against prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra.

BTS Skytrain Silom Line Sala Daeng Station is nearby.

MRT (Bangkok) Lumphini Station and Si Lom Station are nearby.
