Luke Zachrich (born October 1, 1981) is an American mixed martial artist and professional boxer, who currently competes in the Middleweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship.[5] A professional fighter since 2006, Zachrich was a competitor on the seventh season of The Ultimate Fighter, and has also fought for King of the Cage and Bellator. He is also the former UVC Middleweight Champion.[6]

In addition to his training at the Ronin Training Center, Zachrich also works as a main coach for the Ohio-based gym.[7] He currently holds a professional record of 14–4, with seven of his fourteen wins coming by submission.[8]

Background

Before beginning his mixed martial arts career in 2006, Zachrich was a college football player for Bowling Green University. Although he excelled in the sport, after sustaining injuries in one of the last games of the season, Zachrich chose to end his football career.[9] After healing from his injuries, he took up lacrosse, becoming a star player in the sport. However, after meeting with Jujitsu instructor Dave Morris, Zachrich embarked on an MMA career shortly after.[10]

Mixed martial arts career

Amateur career (2006)

After two years of training, Zachrich made his amateur debut, facing off against Ben Kelley at Mega Fighting Championship 1 on January 14, 2006. He won the fight via first round TKO, and following more training, turned professional three months after the fight.[11][12]

King of the Cage (2006; 2007)

Just two fights into his career, Zachrich made his KOTC debut on September 29, 2006, facing Jason Zazelenchuk at KOTC: Detonator, winning the fight via first round rear-naked choke.[13] One year later, he returned to the promotion and submitted Brad Burrick via armbar at KOTC: Explosion on June 15, 2007.[14]

Zachrich would compete two more times outside of the promotion, defeating Darnell Strong and William Hill in the XFO promotion, both via knockout. He signed to compete on The Ultimate Fighter shortly after his win over Hill.

The Ultimate Fighter (2008)

After knocking out William Hill, winning the XFO Middleweight Championship in the process, UFC announced that Zachrich had signed on to compete on the seventh season of the The Ultimate Fighter.[15] In the second episode of the show, Zachrich faced Patrick Schultz in a preliminary exhibition bout. He won the fight via rear-naked choke, successfully getting into the house.[16]

Then, on the sixth episode of the show, Zachrich faced Dan Cramer in the quarter-finals. He lost the fight via TKO, eliminating Zachrich from the show in the process.[17]

Post-TUF career (2008–2010)

After losing his quarter-final fight on TUF 7, Zachrich returned to the regional circuit, and faced Michael Musslewhite at FCFS 28: Clash of the Titans on September 6, 2008. He won the fight via first round KO.[18] In his next fight, he faced Robert Thompson at ICF: Breakout on April 11, 2009,[19] winning the fight via third round keylock.[20]

He then faced J.R. Hines at ICF: Sacrifice on May 16, 2009.[21] Taking the fight to the ground early in the first round, Zachrich would win the fight via keylock, bringing his winning streak to an impressive seven in a row.[22][23]

On October 21, 2009, Indiana based organization MMA Big Show announced that they had signed Zachrich to a multi-fight contract, and he was expected to debut at the promotions New Dawn event on January 9, 2010,[24][25] however, his scheduled bout against Byron Sutton would be cancelled for unknown reasons, and Zachrich would be released from his contract shortly after. Five months after his release, it was announced that Zachrich had been signed by Bellator MMA.[26]

Bellator MMA (2010)

On March 24, 2010, it was announced that Zachrich had signed with Bellator MMA.[27][28] He faced WEC veteran Eric Schambari in the Middleweight tournament quarter-finals at Bellator 16 on April 29, 2010.[29] He lost the fight via arm-triangle choke in the first round, and was subsequently released from the promotion shortly after.[30]

Post-Bellator career (2010–2013)

In his first fight since being released from Bellator, Zachrich faced Nick Kraus for the UVC Middleweight Championship at UVC 20: Clash at the Coliseum on August 4, 2012.[31] He won the fight via unanimous decision, becoming the first middleweight champion in the promotions history.[32][33] He then faced Marcus Finch at UVC 23: Invasion on May 10, 2013.[34][35] Zachrich won the fight via unanimous decision.[36][37]

Zachrich faced Justin Gamble at AAMMA 34: Proving Ground 2 on August 10, 2013, winning the fight via straight armbar, forty-five seconds into the first round.[38][39] The quick finish would also earn Zachrich Submission of the Year honors from Bluegrass MMA.[40]

He was then expected to face UFC veteran Luigi Fioravanti at UVC 27 on February 8, 2014,[41][42] but the event would be postponed to March 15, 2014.[43] However, a couple of weeks after the fight was rescheduled, the entire event would be cancelled for unknown reasons.[44]

Ultimate Fighting Championship (2014–present)

After a near one-year hiatus from fighting, Zachrich made his UFC debut replacing an injured Josh Samman, and faced Caio Magalhães at UFC on Fox 11 on April 19, 2014.[45][46] He lost the bout via TKO, just forty-four seconds into the first round, after being dropped by body shots from Magalhães.[47]

In his second fight with the promotion, Zachrich faced promotional newcomer Guilherme Vasconcelos at UFC 175 on July 5, 2014.[48] He won the fight via unanimous decision, showing better takedown defense and also utilized sharp striking to outwork the debuting Brazilian, and earned his first UFC win in the process.[49][50]

He then faced promotional newcomer Dan Kelly at UFC Fight Night: Rockhold vs. Bisping on November 7, 2014.[51] Despite being a significant favorite coming into the fight, Zachrich would be taken down by Kelly, and then submitted via kimura in the first round, falling to 1–2 in the promotion.[52][53]

Boxing career

A few weeks before signing with the Ultimate Fighting Championship, Zachrich made his boxing debut on March 1, 2014, facing fellow boxing debutant John Felty at TBC: Championship Boxing. He made a successful debut, knocking Felty out cold in the second round with two seconds left.[54]

Personal life

Zachrich is married, and also owns and trains at the Ronin Training Center in Columbus, Ohio.[55] On top of competing in mixed martial arts, Zachrich remotely manages two Mellow Mushroom restaurants.[56]
