Luke Barrie Prosser (born 28 May 1988) is an English footballer who plays as a defender for Southend United.

A product of the Tottenham Hotspur youth academy, Prosser joined Port Vale in 2005. He spent five years at the club, also spending time on loan at Leigh RMI, Salisbury City, and Kidderminster Harriers. He moved on to Southend United in 2010, and played for the club in the 2013 Football League Trophy Final.

Playing career

Port Vale

Born in Enfield, London,[1] Prosser was signed by Port Vale from the Tottenham Hotspur youth system. He played in the Vale youth system as a trainee before signing a professional contract on 1 July 2006.[1] He was offered a new six-month contract by Vale in May 2007,[3] and then promptly another six months to take his contract until the end of the 2007–08 season. He was in York City's squad for a 2–1 pre-season victory against Chesterfield in August 2007.[4] He was loaned out to Conference North side Leigh RMI on 25 January 2008 to gain first team experience,[5] where he made seven appearances.[6] After returning from this loan spell, he made his debut for Vale in a 3–2 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion.[7] He finished the 2007–08 season with five appearances for the club,[8] after which he was offered a new contract.[9]

Following an injury to Gareth Owen in March 2009, he was given an opportunity to affirm his place in the team, and hoped to earn a new contract at the end of the 2008–09 season.[10] He succeeded in this aim, penning a 12-month deal in June 2009.[11][12] Though two months later he was transfer listed by new manager Micky Adams in August 2009, along with five other youngsters, having failed to impress in the pre-season.[13][14] He swiftly joined Conference National side Salisbury City on a one-month loan deal, along with fellow "Valiant" Danny Glover.[15] The pair made their Salisbury debuts as substitutes in a 1–0 defeat to Mansfield Town at the Raymond McEnhill Stadium. Former Vale teammate Kyle Perry was the goalscorer.[16] Quickly fitting into the Salisbury back line, the deal was extended by a further month,[17] with teammate Glover returning to Vale Park.[18] He was re-called by Adams in October 2009,[19][20] though had to settle for a place on the bench, behind the three first choice centre-halves (Lee Collins, Gareth Owen and John McCombe).[21] Another Gareth Owen injury allowed Prosser to return to the first 11 for a league clash with Rotherham United.[22] In an eventful first half he scored his first professional goal with a close range header, before being sent off for two bookable offences.[23] In March 2010 he was informed that he would not be offered a new contract at the Vale at the end of the season, along with fellow youth graduates Danny Glover and Ross Davidson.[24] He immediately joined James Lawrie on loan at local Conference side Kidderminster Harriers,[25] making nine appearances for the mid-table side.

Southend United

Prosser had a trial at Barnet in July 2010,[26] after the club signed numerous other defenders he then joined Lincoln City on trial.[27] Unsuccessful at Lincoln because of finances, he then tried his luck with Southend United, again a League Two side.[28] His trial with Southend was successful, and he signed a one-year deal with the club, along with fellow defender Mark Phillips.[29] Prosser started the 2010–11 season in the first team at Southend, but lost his place and found himself down the pecking order due to the fine form of Bilel Mohsni. In January 2011 he was loaned to Rushden & Diamonds for three months.[30] Prosser was recalled by Southend on 18 February to ease the club's injury crisis,[31] he had made six starts for the Conference club, also scoring just the second goal of his career. Back at Southend he earned a recall against former club Port Vale on 9 April, his last minute goal earning Southend a point.[32] He signed a new one-year deal with the club the following month.[33]

He was limited to 21 league games in 2011–12 due to the form of Mark Phillips and Chris Barker, as Paul Sturrock's "Shrimpers" missed out on the automatic promotion places by one place and one point. In June 2012, it was revealed that Prosser would stay at Southend after the club activated a clause to extend his contract.[34] Prosser featured more regularly for Southend during the 2012–13 season, and enjoyed a good run of form at his preferred position of centre-half. He also captained the side on 9 February, in a 1–1 draw with Accrington Stanley at the Crown Ground, after captain Chris Barker failed a late fitness test.[35] On 7 April, he featured at Wembley in the 2–0 Football League Trophy final defeat to Crewe Alexandra.[36] On 17 June 2013 Prosser rejected an initial offer of a new contract, though manager Phil Brown hinted that further negotiations would take place.[37] Prosser signed a two-year contract extension seven days later.[38]

Prosser made 31 appearances in the 2013–14 campaign, as Southend secured a place in the play-offs, where they were beaten by Burton Albion at the semi-final stage.

Personal life

In July 2009, a "momentary lapse of concentration" led to Prosser hitting 108 mph on the M6 Toll road. Two months later he was banned from driving for seven days and fined £225 (plus £50 costs).[39]

His younger sister, Abbie, is also a footballer, and won 32 youth caps for England. A midfielder, she started her career with Arsenal Ladies from the age of seven until 17; she later played for Doncaster Rovers Belles, and now Barnet Ladies.[40]
