Loveless Academic Magnet Program (LAMP) is a magnet high school located in Montgomery, Alabama. It has a student body of around 450. LAMP was formerly housed at Sidney Lanier High School, but moved into the former site of Loveless Elementary in 1999. A 9th grade class was added in 2001. In 2008, it was named #18 on U.S. News & World Report's Gold Medal List[1] and #56 in Newsweek's list of the top 1000 high schools in the United States. In 2011, Newsweek ranked LAMP as the number 13 best high school in the United States.[2] In 2013, LAMP was named the #1 high magnet high school in the nation, #1 in the state, and #7 overall by U.S. News & World Report.[3] LAMP has accrued extensive scholastic acclaim, particularly in its ability to produce National Merit Scholars. Acceptance into LAMP is based upon academic records indicating demonstrated ability to complete higher-level academic courses and maintain disciplined study and work habits. Lamp has had state tournament appearances as of 2007. In 2008-2009, the Tigers baseball team went to the state championship against Hokes Bluff and loss in two games to be the state runner-ups. Also in that year, the basketball team won the area but was defeated by Dallas County at third in the state. On September 17, 2014, Montgomery Public Schools announced that LAMP would receive a new school site. Until 2016, the students will temporarily be moved into a previously closed school known as Houston Hills. The new site of the school will be at the Montgomery Mall's old site along side with Montgomery's Technology school. The area is currently under construction as One Center.
Athletics
LAMP currently fields 17 competitive athletic teams in 3-A competition. These teams consistently compete at the highest levels of the 4A classification. Beginning in the school year of 2012-2013, LAMP teams competed in 4A athletics for the first time. In 2008-2009 Lamp's baseball and basketball team went to their respective state tournaments. Both won area championships but baseball was Runner-Up in the state and basketball would be stopped at third in state.
