Love Is the Drug started out as a play, written and performed first in 1990s by the Drogheda-based Calipo Theatre Company. Calipo was founded in 1994 by former members of the Droichead Youth Theatre, two of them brothers Darren and Colin Thornton. Love Is the Drug was the first original play devised and written by the company and was a success when it debuted in Drogheda. The play received praise when it toured the country and it was finally adapted to television in 2004, by Irish station RTE Two. Nevertheless, the Calipo team were still involved in the TV adaption, with Darren directing and producing. The script was also written by Barbara Bergin, an already well-known Irish actress, whose credits include Fair City (from 1994 to 1997), Family (1994) and two of Roddy Doyle's film's The Van and The Snapper and Martin Maguire, who had starred in minor roles in TV and Film.

Most of the filming took place in Drogheda, showing some of the town's historic buildings and landmarks. Six episodes were aired before the show ended in December.
