Route description
Beginning on Route No. 1 at Versailles, through Bayou Bienvenue to Route No. 2 at the Gentilly Road. - 1924 Louisiana Legislative Route Description
From the south, LA 61 began at an intersection with LA 1, known as the River Road, just shy of the town of Chalmette. LA 61 continued north into Orleans Parish, crossing an older alignment of LA 2 (known as LA 1092) before terminating at an intersection with LA 2, known as the Gentilly Road. LA 61 simply served as a bypass of New Orleans, allowing Chalmette residents to continue to Mississippi without entering New Orleans itself.
