Louie is a moderately common given name. It is similar to the more common name Louis, but has a more English spelling. It originated in the United Kingdom, however later spread to other English-speaking countries, such as the United States, Australia and Ireland. In 2011, it was the 74th most common forename for births in England and Wales, and Louis is only a little more common here, which was ranked 68th.[1] In the United States, Louis is by far more common. Louie is considered slightly more modern; not using the silent 's' that its counterpart Louis contains.
The name is unisexual; it is usually considered a masculine given name, as a derivation of Louis, but is occasionally given to girls as a diminutive of Louise.[2]
