Long Beach Yacht Club is a private club located on a promontory at the east end of Naples Island in Long Beach, California.

History

The Long Beach Yacht Club

Long Beach Yacht Club was created when in 1929 as the result of an inquiry from the Associated Boating Industries of Northern California regarding the possibility of a powerboat race between Long Beach and San Francisco.

The proposed race would be run during the San Francisco Motor Boat Show, and would provide advertising for the show and the Northern California boating industries. The inquiry was addressed to Daniel M. Callis, Sr., a prominent naval architect active in yacht club committee work.

The race was first run in April 1929 by a "Long Beach Yacht Club", the burgee for which was made by the wife of prominent Long Beach attorney Jonah Jones, Jr. and flown in the race.[1]

The building in which you see was designed and built in 1960. In 1985 Morris Group Architects Project Manager Brian Corntassel orchestrated the current building configuration for Randy Morris with its addition to the upstairs dining area, lengthening of the upstairs bar, the addition of Lava rock Wall bathrooms and Boat steering wheel lighting all standing on 4 columns and glass. The search for wheels took an eternity but were in place for the grand re-opening which now offered Valet Parking and Porte Cochere Grand Entrance. The Lava rock as transferred to Long Beach from Hawaii via a 7 sloop regatta with 6 man teams carrying 100lbs ballast each. Construction was completed by 1986. Upon entry of the building you quickly get the feeling of sailing and competition in sailing and being part of a very big family. A place of prestige and pride. Our doors are always open.
