London Buses route 422 is a Transport for London contracted bus route in London, England. Running between Bexleyheath garage and North Greenwich bus station, it is operated by London Central.
History
Route 422 commenced operating on 16 January 1988 when route 122 was withdrawn between Bexleyheath and Plumstead. Route 422 was initially run by Bexleybus between Bexleyheath and Woolwich, providing an overlap with route 122 between Woolwich and Plumstead.[1]
The poor performance of Bexleybus resulted in the route passing to Boro'line towards the end of 1988.[2] On 17 February 1992, Boro'line was bought out by Kentish Bus[3] which was purchased by British Bus in 1994, who in turn sold out to The Cowie Group in August 1996.[4] Upon being re-tendered on 23 January 1999 the route passed to London Central.[1]
To coincide with the opening of the Jubilee line, on 25 May 1999 route 422 was extended from Woolwich to North Greenwich bus station.[5]
In January 2009 a bus on route 422 was involved in an arson attack in Bexleyheath.[6]
Upon being re-tendered, the route was retained by London Central with a new contract commencing on 22 January 2011 with new Wright Eclipse Gemini 2 bodied Volvo B9TLs.[7] On 5 November 2011, brand new Alexander Dennis Enviro400s were introduced.
