Lokesh Kumar Singhal is an Indian metallurgical engineer, known for his expertise in steel making[1] and for the innovations he brought into the steel making industry in India.[2] He was honored by the Government of India, in 2012, with the fourth highest Indian civilian award of Padma Shri.[3]

Biography

Lokesh Kumar Singhal was born in February 1943[4] and did his graduation in engineering from Banares Hindu University, Varanasi.[1] This was followed by a doctoral degree from the University of Oxford.[1] He has served a few notable steel making enterprises in India such as Tata Metals and Strips Limited, Navsari as its Chief Metallurgist, Alloy Steel Plant, Durgapur of the Steel Authority of India as the head of the Research and Development department, Salem Steel as the Assistant General Manager, Steel Authority of India Limited as the Director (Technology) and Jindal Steel and Power Limited (JSPL)[4] as the Director.[1] He has also served as the Chairman and Managing Director of Mecon Limited.[1] During his tenure at JSPL Limited, Singhal is known to have contributed to the indigenization of the process of steel making, reportedly leading to saving of foreign currency.[2] He has also published scientific papers on steel making.[5]
