LiveU Inc. is the leader in portable live video acquisition, contribution and management solutions. LiveU produces technology for television broadcasters to enable live video links via wireless cellular networks. LiveU offers a range of devices for live video coverage, including backpacks, software and mobile applications. LiveU’s solutions include multiple 4G LTE/3G, HSPA+, WiMAX and Wi-Fi cellular links, which are optimized for maximum video quality based on the available network conditions.[1] LiveU developed and patented the technology for cellular bonding for remote news gathering in the US, Canada, China, Great Britain and other countries.[2] All LiveU products are based on this fourth-generation patented technology. Their headquarters is located in Hackensack New Jersey, United States.
The LiveU hardware, which is carried by the broadcast camera operator, bonds up to 14 cellular (3G/4G – LTE/WiMAX) modems over multiple carriers, as well as multiple LAN and even BGAN satellite connections together to achieve enough bandwidth to carry an HD video signal for broadcast. LiveU holds the patent (US Patent No: 7,948,933) for its Remote Transmission System and was the first company to incorporate 4G LTE into its system.[3]
Products
LU500
The LU500 is LiveU's flagship product. The 2.2 lb unit measures approximately 9" tall by 6" wide, and contains up to 13 network links including 6-8 internal cellular modules. The LU500 was announced at IBC2013 and was made commercially available in January 2014. Since its release it has been used at many major events around the world including the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics[4] as well as the 2014 FIFA World CupTM in Brazil[5] and the 2014 Indian Elections.[6]
LU400
The LU400 is LiveU's latest compact uplink device, offering up to 7 bonded cellular connections. On behalf of Nissan, Magneeto Media used the LU400 to broadcast live from a Nissan Qashqai throughout several cities in Europe to promote their new crossover SUV.[7]
LU-Smart
Supporting several iOS/Android devices, the LU-Smart mobile app allows LiveU’s broadcasting and online video customers to extend their coverage using a smartphone or tablet. Based on LiveU’s fourth-generation uplink technology, LU-Smart bonds internal Wi-Fi and cellular connections to reach optimal video quality. LiveU also offers a handheld monopod, the SmartGRIP with an additional cellular channel (MiFi) and battery.
Camera Integration
In April 2012, Panasonic announced it would incorporate LiveU technology into a professional camcorder.[8] In February 2013, Panasonic and LiveU announced the successful integration of the LiveU LU40 with the AG-HPX600 Panasonic camera[9] This integration was possible via a software upgrade key which allowed the LU40 to be controlled via the camera interface. In March 2013 Hitachi integrated their camera solutions with LiveU units[10] and in April LiveU customers could also integrate their bonded cellular solutions with Sony’s XDCAM camera.[11]
