The list of shipwrecks in 1987 includes all ships sunk, foundered, grounded, or otherwise lost during 1987.
January
14 January
- Testa Rosa ( Philippines): The cargo ship foundered in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Portugal with the loss of all 30 crew.[1]
February
1 February
- Midnatsol Norge ( Norway): The hotel ship foundered off Fredrikstad, Norway. Wreck raised, and broken up in Bruges, Belgium, in June 1987.[2]
March
6 March
- Herald of Free Enterprise ( United Kingdom): Passenger ferry sank in the North Sea off Zeebrugge, Belgium after taking on water and capsizing and sinking stern first; the bow doors of this RO-RO (roll-on roll-off) ferry were subsequently discovered to have been left open. 193 fatalities.
15 March
- Komsomolets Kirgizii ( Soviet Union): The cargo ship foundered in the Atlantic Ocean 150 nautical miles (280 km) off New Jersey, United States. All 37 crew were rescued by American helicopters.[3]
April
16 April
- Musson ( Soviet Navy): The soviet Project 1234 corvette "Musson" sinks after having been hit by a P-15M cruisemissile during an airdefense-exercise in the Sea of Japan.
May
1 May
- Saint Eloi ( France): Collided with Cambridge Ferry ( United Kingdom) off Dover, both ships damaged.
27 May
- Nawal ( Saudi Arabia): Sank at moorings, Jeddah.[4]

- Maral R ( United Kingdom): Driven ashore at Seaton Sluice, Northumberland.
June
12 June
- Iron Cumberland ( Hong Kong): The ore carrier sank in the Pacific Ocean. All 29 crew were rescued by Act 5 ( United Kingdom).[5]
July
28 July
- Fearless ( Cyprus): On fire and grounded at 37°09′N 122°41′E / 37.150°N 122.683°E. Refloated 27 August, subsequently laid up, scrapped in 1988.[4]
September
26 September
- Iran Ajr ( Islamic Republic of Iran Navy) : The minelayer was scuttled in the Persian Gulf by American forces after being captured by Navy SEALs.
October
16 October
- Hengist ( United Kingdom) : Great Storm of 1987: The ferry was beached at Folkestone Warren.[6] Refloated in November, repaired and returned to service.[7]
- Sumnea ( United Kingdom): Great Storm of 1987: The bulk carrier capsized at Dover, Kent.[8]
December
5 December
- Cason ( Panama): The cargo ship caught fire off Galicia, Spain and was beached off Cape Finisterre with the loss of 23 of her 31 crew.[9]
8 December
- Vitatus Putna ( Soviet Union): Factory ship caught fire at 45°04′N 8°09′W / 45.067°N 8.150°W and abandoned by her crew with the loss of two lives.[10]
12 December
- Samson: Crane barge, ran aground at Rams Head, Ardmore, County Waterford, after tow parted in rough seas.
20 December
- Doña Paz ( Philippines): Passenger ferry sunk in the Tablas Strait in the Philippines after colliding with the oil tanker Vector, ( Philippines) killing 4,341 people.[11]
22 December
- Eastern Summit ( Panama): Ran aground in the Zaire River (05°55′S 12°54′E / 5.917°S 12.900°E). Refloated 14 January 1988.[10]
24 December
- The Christian (Flag unknown): The coastal tanker ran aground at Sands of Forvie, Grampian, United Kingdom. Later refloated.[12][13]
