The list of shipwrecks in 1896 includes some ships sunk, foundered, grounded, or otherwise lost during 1896.
January
1 January
- Ealing (
United Kingdom): The ship ran aground off Isaacs Harbour, Nova Scotia, Canada with the loss of eighteen of her 27 crew. She was on a voyage from Pelley Island, Newfoundland to New York, United States.[1]
6 January
- Emperor of St. John (
Canada): The ship was driven ashore and severely damaged south of Cape George, Nova Scotia. She was on a voyage from Montreal, Quebec to Guysboro, Nova Scotia.[2]
March
2 March
- Rosstrevor ( United Kingdom) grounded at Carlingford Lough. Refloated on 7 March, repaired and returned to service.[3]

Belgium) The steamship collided with sailing ship Axel Wästfelt (.svg.png)
Sweden) in the Bay of Biscay (45°50′N 9°30′E / 45.833°N 9.500°E. Both ships sank.[5]
- Drummond Castle United Kingdom ran aground at Ushant, France and sank with the loss of 242 crew and passengers.

- Immanuel ( United Kingdom): The ship was wrecked in the Teifi Estuary.[6]

- Rajah Brooke (

Sarawak): while en route from Singapore to Kuching the cargo ship ran aground and was wrecked on Victory Island between Singapore and Borneo.[7]
August
27 August
- HHS Glasgow (
Zanzibar) sunk by Royal Navy during Anglo-Zanzibar War. All crew rescued.
September
22 September
- Christiana ( United Kingdom): The smack was wrecked at Poppit, Pembrokeshire. Her crew were rescued by Lizzie & Charles Leigh Clare (
Royal National Lifeboat Institution).[6]
24 September
- Hugo (
Spain): The former White Star Line passenger liner ran aground on Terschelling Island in the Netherlands. She was declared a total loss. After refloating, she was auctioned for scrap on 9 December 1896 and towed to Amsterdam, where she was broken up
26 September
- Alexander Yeats ( United Kingdom): She ran aground at Gurnard's Head. Crew of 19 rescued.[8]
27 September
- The Adgar and Baron Holberg (flags unknown): The ships were wrecked off Folkestone, Kent, United Kingdom. All crew from both vessels saved by the Hythe Lifeboat.[9]
December
5 December
Nathan F Cobb
- Nathan F Cobb (
United States) grounded on the outer sand bar off the coast of Ormond Beach, FL. The schooner capsized after leaving port from Brunswick, Georgia and drifted to Ormond Beach in Northeast Florida. Two crewman and a civilian rescuer were killed during the incident.
8 December
- British Peer ( United Kingdom) struck a reef off Saldanha Bay, South Africa. Eighteen crew killed.
