3 January
- Nederland (
Belgium): Stranded off Cherry Island, Maryland. Later refloated and returned to service.[1]
7 January
- Speedy (
United Kingdom): The ship was driven ashore and wrecked at Chesil Beach, Dorset.[2]
8 January
- Sarah Ann (
United Kingdom): The barque foundered in Swansea Bay. Her crew were rescued by Wolverhampton (
Royal National Lifeboat Institution).[3]
21 January
- Mercur (
Norway): The barque was driven ashore and wrecked at Slade, Glamorgan, United Kingdom. Her crew were rescued. She was on a voyage from Boston, Massachusetts, United States to Penarth, Glamorgan.[3]
Unknown date
- Sofia (
Italy): The brigantine was driven ashore in the Longhole Gut, Glamorgan, United Kingdom after 21 January. All ten people on board survived. She was on a voyage from Naples to Swansea, Glamorgan.[3]
February
11 February
- Mary Stenhouse (
United Kingdom): The ship was driven ashore at Rhosilli, Glamorgan. Ten of the 22 people on board were lost trying to reach land. She was refloated the next day,.[3]
26 February
- Rosaire (
France): The Nantes brig hit and sank when she hit the Seven Stones Reef, between the Isles of Scilly and Cornwall while carrying coal from Newport to Brest. Four of her crew were picked up by the pilot cutter Queen.[4]
March
19 March
- Happy Return (
United Kingdom): The sloop was wrecked at Port Eynon Point, Glamorgan. She was on a voyage from Swansea, Glamorgan to Carmarthen.[3]

- Great Republic (
United States): Wrecked on Sand Island, Columbia River.
August
27 August
- Queen of Britain (
United Kingdom): The brig was abandoned in the Bristol Channel. Her crew were rescued by Wolverhampton (
Royal National Lifeboat Institution).[3]

25 September
- De Ruyter (
Belgium): Aground in the Scheldt near Hoedekenskerke. Refloated on 27 September and returned to service.[5]
November
22 November
- Waubuno (
Canada): Foundered off Christian Island, Lake Huron with the loss of all twenty-four on board.
December
21 December
- Barque Adelphoi (
New South Wales): Wrecked off Port Hacking.
28 December
- Agnes Irving (
New South Wales): Wrecked in the Macleay River, Trial Bay.
