5 January
- Theodore Engels ( Belgium): Driven ashore at Maurities during a gale, later refloated and returned to service.[1]
25 January
- Brig Sarah ( United Kingdom): Wrecked off Margate, Kent in a storm.[2]

- Glide ( United States): Destroyed by a boiler explosion.
March
9 March
- Daring ( United Kingdom): The full-rigged ship was driven ashore and wrecked at Pwll Du, Glamorgan with the loss of all six crew. She was on a voyage from Swansea to Cardiff.[3]
15 March
- Collingwood ( United Kingdom): The ship was driven ashore and wrecked at Lyme Regis, Dorset.[4]
April
21 April
- Cornish Diamond ( United Kingdom): The schooner was wrecked on the Mixon Shoal, in the Bristol Channel with the loss of two of her crew.[3]
June
13 June
- Megaera ( Royal Navy): Sprang a leak on a voyage from South Africa to Australia. Beached at Île Saint-Paul, French Southern and Antarctic Lands on 17 June and declared a total loss.
22 June
- The ship-rigged Knight Errant was lost off Tierra del Fuego; after rescuing her crew the ship Sam Cearns was also wrecked.
September

- - Barks Awashonks, Carlotta, Concordia, Elizabeth Swift, Emily Morgan, Eugenia, Fanny, George Howland, Henry Taber, J D Thompson, Massachusetts, Minerva, Monticello, Navy, Oliver Crocker, Paiea, Roman, Seneca and Thomas Dickason; Brigs Comet, Kohola and Victoria; Ships Contest, Champion, Florida, Gay Head, John Wells, Julian, Mary, Reindeer, William Rotch (all United States): All lost or abandoned in the Whaling Disaster of 1871. Minerva discovered intact in 1872 and returned to service.

- Robert Cottle ( United Kingdom): The schooner ran aground off Southwold, Suffolk and was wrecked with the loss of three of her six crew.[5]
December
7 December
- Friends ( United Kingdom): The ship was driven ashore at Southwold, Suffolk. Her crew were rescued. She was on a voyage from Goole, Yorkshire to Southwold.[5]
