List of shipwrecks in 1856

The list of shipwrecks in 1856 includes some ships sunk, wrecked or otherwise lost during 1856.

January

Pacific ( United States): The passenger ship departed from Liverpool, Lancashire, United Kingdom for New York. She subsequently struck an iceberg and foundered in the Atlantic Ocean with the loss of all 186 people on board.

Glenmoriston ( United Kingdom): The ship was wrecked at Southwold, Suffolk. Her crew were rescued.^[1]

Catherine Jenkins ( United Kingdom): The barque was driven ashore and wrecked in Lucas Cove, Glamorgan with the loss of seven of her eleven crew. She was on a voyage from Santiago de Cuba, Cuba to Swansea, Glamorgan.^[2]

Odin ( United Kingdom): The brig was wrecked on th Barnard Sand, in the North Sea off the coast of Suffolk before 16 April.^[1]

William IV ( United Kingdom): The ship was driven ashore and wrecked at Walberswick, Suffolk before 12 May.^[1]

Santo Andre ( Spain): The galley foundered off Boa Vista, Cape Verde Islands, Portugal.^[3]

Isaac Allerton ( United States): The ship foundered in a hurricane 15 nautical miles (28 km) east south east of Key West, Florida.

Arabia ( United States): The steamboat struck a submerged object and sank in the Missouri River near Kansas City, Kansas. All on board survived.

Niagara ( United States): The palace steamer caught fire and asank in Lake Michigan with the loss of more than 60 lives.

Emmet ( United Kingdom): The ship foundered in Swansea Bay. Her crew were rescued.^[2]
Happy return ( United Kingdom): The ship foundered in Swansea Bay. Her crew were rescued.^[2]
Monkey ( United Kingdom): The schooner foundered in Swansea Bay. Her crew were rescued.^[2]
Pascoe Grenfell ( United Kingdom): The barque was driven ashore in Swansea Bay.^[2]
Pioneer ( United Kingdom): The brigantine foundered in Swansea Bay. Her crew were rescued.^[2]
Swiftsure ( United Kingdom): The schooner was driven ashore in Swansea Bay.^[2]
Western Star ( United Kingdom): The schooner foundered in Swansea Bay. Her crew were rescued.^[2]

Eleanor Lancaster ( United Kingdom): The three-masted barque was wrecked on Oyster Bank, in the Pacific Ocean off Newcastle, New South Wales. Her sixteen crew survived

Petronilia ( Belgium): The barque was wrecked at Chesil Beach, Dorset, United Kingdom with the loss of four of her crew.^[4]

Coromandel ( United Kingdom: The full-rigged ship was wrecked at Great Yarmouth, Norfolk.
Sea Witch ( United States): The clipper ran aground off Havana, Cuba and was wrecked.
