The list of shipwrecks in 1838 includes some ships sunk, wrecked or otherwise lost during 1838.
January
8 January
- Peace ( United Kingdom): The yawl was wrecked on the Newcombe Sand, in the North Sea off the coast of Norfolk with the loss of all fifteen people on board.[1]
30 January
- Hero ( United Kingdom): The brig ran aground and was wrecked at Port Eynon, Glamorgan. Her crew were rescued. She was on a voyage from Chile to Swansea, Glamorgan.[2]
February
26 February
- Ariel ( United Kingdom): The ship was wrecked on the Cross Sand, in the North Sea off the coast of Norfolk. Her crew were rescued. She subsequently came ashore at Covehithe, Suffolk.[1]
March
24 March
- Eliza Jane ( United Kingdom): The sloop was wrecked in Rhosilli Bay with the loss of all three crew.[2]
- Jeremiah ( United Kingdom): The sloop was wrecked near Worms Head, Glamorgan. Her crew survived.[2]
April
16 April
- Diamond ( United Kingdom): The brig was wrecked on the Barnard Sand, in the North Sea off the coast of Suffolk.[1]
May
5 May
- Horace ( United States): The barque was wrecked on rocks off Kennebunkport, Maine and then came ashore. She was on a voyage from New Orleans, Louisiana to Liverpool, Lancashire, United Kingdom.[3]
September
7 September
- Forfarshire ( United Kingdom): The brigantine-rigged paddle steamer ran aground on Big Harcar, Farne Islands, Northumberland with the loss of 42 of the 60 people on board. Nine of the survivors escaped in a lifeboat, the renainder were rescued by Grace and William Darling, who used a coble. Forfarshire was on a voyage from Hull, Yorkshire to Dundee, Perthshire.

- Feronia ( United Kingdom): The sloop was wrecked in Swansea Bay. Her three crew were rescued.[2]
October
28 October
- Princess Augusta ( United Kingdom): The barque was driven ashore and wrecked at Lowestoft, Suffolk. Her crew were rescued.[1]

- Brutus ( Texas Navy): The 10-gun schooner was wrecked in a storm.
November
27 November
- Sisters ( United Kingdom): The ship was driven ashore and wrecked at Rhosilli, Glamorgan. Her crew survived.[2]

- Arethusa ( United Kingdom): The ship was lost in the English Channel off Fleet, Dorset between 28 and 30 November. All hands lost.[4]
- Columbine ( United Kingdom): The schooner was driven ashore and wrecked west of Wyke Regis, Dorset between 28 and 30 November.[4]
- Dove ( United Kingdom): The ship was abandoned in West Bay, Dorset between 28 and 30 November. She subsequently came ashore at Chesil Beach, Dorset and was wrecked,[4]
- Le Jean Bart ( France): The smack was driven ashore and wrecked at Burton Bradstock, Dorset between 28 and 39 November with the loss of four of her nine crew.[4]
- Louise ( Sweden): The barque was driven ashore at Chesil Beach between 28 and 30 November. Her crew survived.[4]
- Mary Ann ( United Kingdom): The schooner was lost in the English Channel off Abbotsbury, Dorset between 28 and 30 November.[4]
