This is a list of people from Stockport, in North West England. The demonym of Stockport is Stopfordian, however, this list may include people from Bredbury, Cheadle, Cheadle Hulme, Marple, Reddish and Romiley, all from the wider Metropolitan Borough of Stockport. - Joan Bakewell (b. 1933): TV presenter, newsreader and journalist[1]
- Peter Barkworth (1929–2006): actor. Born Margate, moved to Bramhall as young child.[2]
- Peter Boardman (1950–1982): mountaineer who died on Everest North-East Ridge, he was born in Bramhall and went to school at Stockport Grammar.[3]
- John Bradshaw (1602–1659), regicide.[4]
- Liam Broady (born 1994): 2010 Wimbledon Boy's Doubles champion. Born Manchester, now lives in Stockport.[5]
- Andrew Buchan (born 1979): TV and stage actor, who was born in Stockport and brought up in the Bolton suburb of Lostock.[6][7][8]
- Peter Butterworth (1917–1978) : Film actor, well known for appearances in "Carry on" films[9]

- Norman Foster (b. 1935): Stockport-born architect who was made Baron Foster of Thames Bank, Reddish, in 1999.[13] He was brought up in Levenshulme, Manchester which borders Heaton Chapel, Stockport.
- Martin Fry (b. 1958): is the lead singer for the British new wave band ABC.
- Yvette Fielding (b. 1968): Actress and television presenter[14]
- Nicholas Frankau (b. 1968): is an English actor best known for playing the role of Flt. Lt. Carstairs in the British sitcom Allo 'Allo!.

- Dominic Howard (b. 1977): Stockport-born drummer of the alternative rock band Muse.[20]

- Tom Ince Thomas Christopher "Tom" Ince (born 30 January 1992) is an English footballer who plays for Crystal Palace, on loan from Blackpool, as a winger. He is the son of former England captain Paul Ince.[3]

- Tim McInnerny (b. 1956): actor who was born and brought up in Cheadle Hulme and is best known for his roles as Lord Percy and Captain Darling in Blackadder.[29]

- Carol Morley (b. 1966): is an English film director, screenwriter and producer.
- Paul Morley (b. 1957): Music journalist, musician, producer and founder of record label ZTT[31]
- Matthew Walker (b.1978) is a British swimmer who has participated in four Paralympic Games, winning eleven medals. He competes in the S7 (butterfly and freestyle), SM7 (medley) and SB7 (breaststroke) classifications.[1][2][32]

- Fred Perry (1909–1995): former World No.1 tennis player and Wimbledon Champion born in Portwood and granted the freedom of Stockport in 1934.[33]
- Samuel Perry (1877–1954) : MP for Kettering and father of Fred Perry.[34]

- Fred Ridgway (b. 1923): first-class cricketer who played for Kent and represented England in five Test matches and was born in Stockport.[35]

- Samantha Siddall (b. 1982): Reddish-born actress known for playing Mandy Maguire in Shameless.[36]
- Daz Sampson (b.1974) a British music/television producer and 2006 UK Eurovision Song Contest contestant.
- Richard Sykes (1839-1923) was a rugby player who helped found two major clubs and became a landowner in North Dakota, USA founding five towns there one named after his birthplace Edgeley

- Maurice Tremlett (1923–1984): first-class cricketer who played for Somerset and represented England in three Test matches and was born in Stockport.[37]
- Steve Thomas (1963): A retired ice hockey right winger born in Stockport, who played 20 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Chicago Blackhawks, New York Islanders, New Jersey Devils, Mighty Ducks of Anaheim and Detroit Red Wings.

- Paul Warhurst (b. 1969): Stockport-born footballer who played for many clubs including Blackburn Rovers, Bolton Wanderers, Oldham Athletic, and Sheffield Wednesday.[38][39]
- Joanne Whalley (b. 1961): aka Joanne Whalley-Kilmer. Actress born in Salford who grew up in Stockport.
- Hannah Whelan (b. 1992): gymnast who represented the United Kingdom at the 2008 Summer Olympics who lives and trains in Stockport.[40][41]
- Sir Joseph Whitworth (1803–1887): prominent Victorian engineer who has given his name to many Manchester buildings and streets was born in Stockport[42][43]
- Rick Witter (b. 1972): Stockport-born[44] singer, songwriter and frontman of the York-based rock band, Shed Seven.
