List of newspapers in India by readership
This is a list of the newspapers in India by readership according to the Indian Readership Survey (IRS).
Methodology
These figures are compiled by media Research Users Council (MRUC) in the Indian Readership Survey (IRS). IRS 2013 data is based on sample survey and is modelled on internationally accepted annual sample spread. The IRS is the largest continuous readership research study in the world with an annual sample size exceeding 2.56 lakh respondents.
The methodology for IRS 2013 was criticized by 18 top media houses in India, including Jagran, Bhaskar, India Today, Ananda Bazar Patrika, Lokmat, Outlook, Daily News and Analysis (DNA), Sakshi, The Hindu, The Times of India, Amar Ujala, The Tribune, Bartaman Patrika, Aaj Samaj, The Statesman, Mid Day, Nai Duniya and Dinakaran. The media houses rubbished the IRS report for 2013, calling it badly flawed. They pointed out that there were major anamolies in the findings. For example, the Chennai-based Hindu Business Line had thrice as many readers in Manipur as in Chennai according to the IRS. There were wild swings in the readership data from the previous survey; e.g. every major newspaper in Andhra Pradesh had lost readers by 30% to 65%.[1]
