This list of 100 is based on an attendance survey for 2013 compiled by The Art Newspaper published in April 2014.[1] The country with the highest number of museums and visitors in the top 100 is the United Kingdom (17 museums, 38 million visitors), while the United States (16 museums, 28 million visitors) is second. France (10 museums, 24 million visitors), Spain (11 museums, 14 million visitors) and Australia (9 museums, 9 million visitors) complete the top five. Several major art museums, such as the Palace Museum in Beijing, which annually draws close to 12 million visitors,[2] were not included.
