  43. According to federal, state and local government investigators, only 39 African Americans died. But civilian investigations shortly after the riot indicate that between 100 and 200 African Americans died. The riot was notable for its brutality, including scalping, gouging out of eyes, and children acting as murderers. Elliott M.
