Earthquakes in 2006 resulted in about 6602 fatalities. The May 2006 Java earthquake was the deadliest with 5,749 fatalities. The 2006 Kuril Islands earthquake was the largest in 2006 at an 8.3 on the moment magnitude scale. The 2006 Pangandaran earthquake and tsunami caused a significant tsunami that killed 730 people. Other significant earthquakes in 2006 struck Iran, Taiwan, China, Argentina, and Tajikistan.
