- A magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck Kagoshima Prefecture, Kyushu, Japan on January 12 at a depth of 5.0km. [1] At the time of the earthquake a volcanic eruption of the Sakurajima volcano was ongoing. The earthquake itself caused around 29 deaths and caused the destruction of 120 homes. [2]
- A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck off the east coast of Kamchatka, Russia on January 20 at a depth of 60.0km. [3]
- A magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck off the coast of Maule Region, Chile on January 30 at a depth of 0.0km. [4]
- A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck Balochistan, Pakistan on February 6 at a depth of 100.0km. [5]
- A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck off the east coast of Honshu, Japan on February 7 at a depth of 35.0km. [6]
- A magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck Oruro Department, Bolivia on February 26 at a depth of 130.0km. [7]
- A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Akita Prefecture, Honshu, Japan on March 14 at a depth of 5.0km. [8] 94 people died and 640 homes were destroyed. [9]

- A magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck south of the Solomon Islands on April 11 at a depth of 50.0km. [12]
- A magnitude 4.9 earthquake struck near the town of Giarre, Province of Catania, Italy on May 8 at an unknown depth. 120 deaths were reported as well as the destruction of 223 homes. This was an unusually high death toll for such a small magnitude event. [13]
- An unusual magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck Cuanza Sul Province, Angola on May 24 at a depth of 35.0km. [14]
- A magnitude 7.9 earthquake struck off the northern coast of Papua, Indonesia on May 26 at a depth of 0.0km. [15] At least 101 people were killed and many homes were destroyed. A tsunami was generated in the area. [16]
- A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck eastern Panama on May 28 at a depth of 70.0km. [17]
- A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck the Santa Cruz Islands, Solomon Islands on June 20 at a depth of 50.0km. [18]
- A magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck off the southwestern coast of Sumatra, Indonesia on June 25 at a depth of 0.0km. [19] 20 people were killed and another 20 were injured. A few homes were destroyed in the area. [20]

- A magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck off the east coast of Taiwan on July 6 at a depth of 60.0km. [23]
- A magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck west of Vancouver Island, Canada on July 21 at a depth of 35.0km. [24]
