List of countries with IKEA stores

The original IKEA store was opened in Sweden in 1958. The first stores outside Sweden were opened in Norway (1963) and Denmark (1969). In the 1970s, stores expanded to other European countries, with the first store outside Scandinavia opening in Switzerland (1973), followed by Germany (1974). During the same decade, stores opened in other countries, including Japan, (1974), Australia, Hong Kong, Canada (1975), the Netherlands and Singapore (1978). Germany, with 46 stores, is IKEA's largest market, followed by the United States, with 38. IKEA currently operates 338 stores in 40 countries. However, the company has thus far not shown much of a presence in developing countries.[1] The location for the store is vitally important for IKEA as it should be near major roads, motorways and/or public transport.

Switzerland Switzerland 1973 Spreitenbach[9] 9 First IKEA outside Scandinavia.
Germany Germany 1974 Munich (Eching)[10] 49 IKEA's largest market. Berlin alone has four stores. The Berlin "Landsberger Allee" store is the 2nd largest in Europe with 43000 m2.

8 A joint venture with a Japanese department store. IKEA withdrew from the market in 1986 because of stagnant sales,[11] then returned in 2006 to Funabashi, Chiba under a distribution partnership with the Mitsubishi Corporation.[12][13]
Australia Australia 1975 Sydney (Artarmon) 9 There are seven stores in Australia. Rhodes and Tempe in Sydney, Richmond and Springvale in Melbourne, Logan in Brisbane, and also Perth and Adelaide, although Perth and Adelaide are a franchise owned by CEBAS Pty LTD. IKEA have announced they will open stores in Marsden Park, Sydney; Campbellfield, Melbourne; North Lakes, Brisbane; and Canberra. The planned Campbellfield store will be the largest free-standing store in the Southern Hemisphere totaling 41,000 square metres.[14]
Canada Canada 1975 Dartmouth, Nova Scotia 13 According to the Toronto Star the first Canadian Store opened in Dartmouth, NS, in 1975 and closed 13 years later.[15] As of 2012, there were twelve stores in five provinces—two in British Columbia (Richmond, BC and Coquitlam), two in Alberta (Calgary and Edmonton), one in Manitoba (Winnipeg), five in Ontario (Burlington, Etobicoke, North York, Ottawa, and Vaughan), and two in Quebec (Boucherville and Montreal).[16] The Ottawa store, opened on 7 December 2011, was at the time the largest IKEA in Canadaapproximately 37,000 square metres. [17] The newest Canadian IKEA is the Winnipeg store, opened on 28 November 2012.[18]

On 8 May 2012 IKEA began construction on expanding its current Montreal location into North America's largest IKEA store. Completed in summer 2013, the new IKEA Montreal measures 43,626 square metres.[19]

1975 Kowloon (Tsim Sha Tsui) 3 The first store opened in Hong Kong (then a British colony) in Tsim Sha Tsui, the original store was later relocated. Since 2007, IKEA has had 3 stores in Hong Kong: Causeway Bay, Kowloon Bay, Shatin and 1 warehouse in Sheung Shui. All are franchises owned by Dairy Farm International Holdings. The Shatin Store was expanded in December 2009. In summer 2010, the Kowloon Bay store was relocated from Telford Plaza to Megabox, with area of 150,000 square feet (14,000 m2) it is currently the largest store in Hong Kong.
Austria Austria 1977 Vienna (Vösendorf) 7 A new store, the seventh of Austria, was opened in 2008 in Klagenfurt.
Singapore Singapore 1978 Bukit Timah (Sixth Avenue) 2 Original store moved to Katong in 1984, then to Alexandra Road in Queenstown in 1995. A second store opened in November 2006 in Tampines.
Netherlands Netherlands 1978 Sliedrecht 13 Groningen store is the 3rd largest in Europe with 42,000 square metres (450,000 sq ft). Newest store opened in February 2015 in Zwolle. The old store in Sliedrecht closed in 2006.
Spain Spain 1980 Gran Canaria (Las Palmas) 20 There are 16 stores on mainland Spain & 4 stores in the Canary Islands & the Balearic Islands.[20]
Iceland Iceland 1981 Reykjavík 1 Originally, IKEA started its business in a loft above a grocery store in Reykjavík. Later after having spent a decade in a large warehouse, it reopened (at around 20,000 m2) in Garðabær in October 2006.[21] IKEA's director in Iceland said that they want to open a store in Akureyri in the upcoming years.[22]
France France 1981 Paris (Bobigny) 31 With 7 stores, Paris has more IKEAs than any other city.
Saudi Arabia Saudi Arabia 1983 Jeddah 3 Stores in Riyadh, Jeddah and Dhahran. The Riyadh and Jeddah stores have been completely rebuilt and relocated in recent years. The store in Dhahran opened in 2008.
Belgium Belgium 1984 Brussels (Zaventem and Ternat) 6 Stores in Anderlecht, Arlon, Ghent, Hognoul, Wilrijk and Zaventem. In 2008 the IKEA store in Ternat closed.

In 2016 a new IKEA store will open in Hasselt.

Kuwait Kuwait 1984 Kuwait City 1 Opened in the industrial district of Shuwaikh in 1984; transferred to a significantly larger new facility at The Avenues (a shopping centre) in early 2007.
United States United States 1985 Plymouth Meeting 42[23] Built in Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania; has since moved to Conshohocken, Pennsylvania. The original IKEA building has since been demolished[24] and is now a Whole Foods Market. In 1992, IKEA acquired the California-based STØR chain, adding 3 of that chain's 4 locations to their US presence; that chain's Houston, Texas location, which operated under franchise agreement, became one of only a few independently franchised IKEA locations in the world.[25] Most-recent stores opened since 2008 include Tampa, Florida; Charlotte, North Carolina; Brooklyn, New York; and Centennial, Colorado. New locations in the Miami suburb of Sweetwater, Florida[26] and the Kansas City suburb of Merriam, Kansas[27] are slated to open in Autumn 2014. IKEA announced on 4 December 2013, a new 389,000 square foot store would begin construction in 2014 in St. Louis, Missouri in the city's Midtown District.[28]
United Kingdom United Kingdom 1987 Warrington, Cheshire 18 The largest UK stores are in Croydon in London and at Lakeside Shopping Centre in Essex, each with a capacity of 37,000 m2. [29] The newest stores were completed in December 2007 in Coventry city centre and at the Holywood Exchange in Belfast.[30][31] In November 2007 a planning application was approved for an 18th store in Southampton, which opened on February 12, 2009.[32][33] Future UK locations under consideration are Portsmouth and Slough. Plans to build a store in Sheffield have been shelved.[34] Ikea has planning permission to build a new 38,000 square metres (410,000 sq ft) store in Calcot, Reading, Berkshire.[35]
Italy Italy 1989 Milan (Cinisello Balsamo) 23 The last one opened in Pisa in 2014. The largest store is located in Carugate, Milan, extending to 38000 m2.
Hungary Hungary 1990 Budapest 2 There are two stores in Hungary, one in the capital city Budapest and one in Budaörs. Two other stores are planned, with one in Soroksár[36]
Poland Poland 1991 Warsaw (Janki) 8 Original location in central Warsaw is now closed. Warsaw has two stores in Janki and Targówek. There are also stores in Gdańsk, Wrocław, Katowice, Kraków, Poznań and Łódź. Two new stores are being built in Bydgoszcz and Lublin, while four others are planned in Zabrze, Rzeszów, Częstochowa, and Szczecin.

1991 Prague (Budějovická) 4 There are two IKEA stores in Prague - one at Zličín and one at Černý Most; both Zličín and Černý most are located at the periphery of Prague and at the endstations of underground line B. The first original store at Budějovická - Prague 4 was abandoned. In the Czech Republic there are two locations - in the country's second largest city, Brno, and in Ostrava. There are 3 stores planned within 6 years (Plzeň, Hradec Králové and a third location in Prague).
United Arab Emirates United Arab Emirates 1991 Dubai 2 The U.A.E.'s stores are located in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The IKEA store in Abu Dhabi was located at the Marina Mall. It was then shifted to Yas Island with shuttle services from Marina Mall and Alwadha Mall.[37] The Dubai store recently moved to the Festival Waterfront Centre.
Slovakia Slovakia 1992 Bratislava 1 Original store was closed upon the opening of a new store in the Avion Shopping Park. There are two more stores planned in Slovakia, in Košice and Žilina.
Taiwan Taiwan 1994 Taipei 5 The first store opened in Taipei in 1994, but was closed in 2002. There are currently 4 IKEA stores in Taiwan: Taipei, New Taipei, Taoyuan and Kaohsiung. The fifth store in Taichung has now opened. IKEA was initially owned by Jardine Matheson, but is currently owned by Dairy Farm International Holdings.
Finland Finland 1996 Espoo 5 New store in Vantaa in 2003, in Raisio in 2008 and in Tampere in 2010. The Tampere store is the biggest IKEA in Finland. In 2011 a new store opened in Kuopio.
Malaysia Malaysia 1996 Bandar Utama, Selangor 1 Re-located to Mutiara Damansara, Selangor, in 2003. The new IKEA store in Mutiara Damansara was the largest in Asia at that time with a shop floor area of approximately 27,000 square metres (290,000 sq ft). IKEA also set to open stores in Johor Baru, Penang and Klang Valley.[38] Later in 2011, IKEA also plan to open second store in Kuala Lumpur within next two years.[39][40] Nevertheless, after much speculation on new stores location, Ikea has finally unveiled plan to set up a store in Batu Kawan, Penang, in 2015 and expect to open by 2020.[41]
China China 1998 Shanghai 16[42] There are 2 IKEA stores in Shanghai, stores in Beijing, Tianjin, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chengdu, Nanjing, Dalian and Shenyang. Most recent store opening in Chongqing in 2014.[43] IKEA is also aiming at expanding a second store in Beijing as well as a new store in Wuhan.[44]
Russia Russia 2000 Moscow (Khimki) 14 Fourth market by revenue after Germany, the U.S. and Sweden. There are 3 IKEA stores in Moscow (Khimki, Teply Stan and Belaya Dacha), 2 stores in St. Petersburg (Parnas and Dybenko), stores in Nizhny Novgorod, Yekaterinburg, Kazan, Novosibirsk, Rostov-on-Don, Novaya Adygea (in Adygea near Krasnodar), Samara, Omsk and Ufa. The IKEA stores in Russia are in connection with MEGA malls developed by IKEA. 5-6 new openings planned by 2020
Israel Israel 2001 Netanya 3 The second store opened on March 9, 2010, in Rishon LeZion, a suburb of Tel Aviv. The store has an area of 33,000 sq. meter. The store in Netanya was destroyed in a fire on February 5, 2011,[45] and after extensive renovations it was reopened on March 6, 2012.[46] A third store was opened on March, 2014 in Kiryat Ata, one of Haifa's suburbs.[47]
Greece Greece 2001 Thessaloniki 5 The first store opened in Thessaloniki on October 24, 2001. The second store opened in Athens (Airport Retail Park) on April 23, 2004. The third store, also in Athens (Egaleo), opened on March 26, 2008. The fourth store, in Larissa, opened on October 14, 2009. The fifth store, in Ioannina, opened in December 2010.[48] Three more stores are planned by 2013 in Athens (third store, possibly in Elefsina), Heraklion and in the new shopping center Iasmos Park in Komotini.[49]
Portugal Portugal 2004 Lisbon (Alfragide) 3 Second store opened on July 31, 2007 in Matosinhos, with 36,000 square metres (390,000 sq ft),[50] and third store opened on 25 May 2010, in Frielas, Loures, the largest store on the Iberian Peninsula with 39,000 m2.
Turkey Turkey 2005 Istanbul 5 There are two stores in İstanbul (Bayrampaşa and Ümraniye), one store in İzmir (Bornova) and one store in Bursa (Osmangazi). A fifth store in Ankara opened in 2011.
Romania Romania 2007 Bucharest (Băneasa) 1 26,000 square metres (280,000 sq ft) store opened on March 21, 2007, in Baneasa "Feeria" Shopping Center.[51] The second store will be opened in 2009, in Iaşi, in Era Shopping Park.[52] Other stores are planned to be opened in Bucharest, Braşov, Cluj-Napoca, Constanţa, Galaţi and Timișoara by 2013.[53]
Cyprus Cyprus 2007 Nicosia (Strovolos) 1 22,000 square metres (240,000 sq ft) store opened in September 2007.[54][55][56]
Republic of Ireland Ireland 2009 [57] Dublin (Ballymun) 1 The first IKEA store in the Republic of Ireland (and second on the island of Ireland) opened on July 27, 2009. The store was granted planning permission in 2007 with conditions,[58][59] and although the store was completed in February 2009,[60] planning conditions[61] resulted in the delayed opening.[62]
Dominican Republic Dominican Republic 2010 Santo Domingo 3 The first Dominican IKEA store opened 17 February 2010 in Santo Domingo.[63] It is the first IKEA store in Latin America.[64] The owner of the IKEA franchisee for Dominican Republic, Anders Alm, is reported as saying that the new store has created 400 jobs.[65]
Bulgaria Bulgaria 2011 Sofia 1 The Swedish furniture giant IKEA is opening its first store in the Bulgarian capital Sofia on September 20, 2011.[66]

Thailand Thailand 2011 Bangkok 1 The first IKEA in Thailand opened its door on 3 November 2011, in Bang Phli, Samut Prakan. The store is adjacent to a major interchange where the Bang Na-Bang Pakong Highway and Kanchanaphisek Outer Ring Road intersect, with convenient access from the more affluent eastern suburbs of Bangkok. It is expected to have 43,000 square metres (460,000 sq ft).of retail space as a part of the Mega Bangna Shopping Center.[68][69]
Lithuania Lithuania 2013 Vilnius 1 The first IKEA store in Lithuania was opened on August 14, 2013 in Vilnius. It has the capacity of 26,000 square metres and is also considered to be one of the best projects in the history of IKEA. The store is located near Vilnius International Airport.[70][71]
Egypt Egypt 2013 Cairo 1 The first IKEA store in Africa has opened its door on November 26, 2013. The store is located in Cairo Festival City Mall, and it has 34,500 square meters.[72] The mega project owned by Al-Futtaim Group is located in New Cairo, near the Suez Road, Ring Road, Police Academy, and The American International School in Egypt.[73]
Qatar Qatar 2013 Doha 1 The first IKEA in Qatar opened its door on March 11, 2013.[74] The store is located in Doha Festival City Mall.
Jordan Jordan 2014 Amman 1 The first IKEA in Jordan [75] opened its doors on 6 March 2014.[76] IKEA Jordan store is located on Airport road, after Madaba bridge going to Amman and it is IKEA’s largest store in the Middle East with an area of 42,000 square metres and 400 Jordanian employees.
Croatia Croatia 2014 Zagreb 1 The first IKEA in Croatia [77] opened its doors on 21 August 2014 and with total area of 38,000 m2 is one of the 5 biggest in Europe and among 10 biggest IKEA stores in the world.[78]
Indonesia Indonesia 2014 Jakarta 1 IKEA just opened a store in Jakarta, Indonesia, under a partnership with the Hero Supermarket company.[79][80] IKEA opened their doors to Indonesia in July 2014 at Alam Sutera, Tangerang, located in the western suburbs of Jakarta.[81]
South Korea South Korea 2014 Gwangmyeong 1 The world's largest IKEA store at 59,000 square meters (640,000 square feet)[82][83] opened near the KTX Gwangmyeong Station, located at the heart of the Seoul Capital Area, on December 18, 2014.[84] A second store will open in Goyang, with a third one planned in Gangdong District, Seoul.[85] IKEA plans to have 5 stores in the country by 2020.[86]
Serbia Serbia 2016 Belgrade 0 IKEA has acquired land for a store in Belgrade and plans to open a total of 5 stores across the country.[87]

India India TBA TBA 0 IKEA plans to open 25 stores, investing about 10,500 crore (US$ 2 billion) over 15 to 20 years.[95][96] Chief Executive Peter Agnefjall noted in 2013 that the company's current focus is on strengthening existing markets. IKEA's first India store is likely to be opened in Hyderabad.[97]
