List of attacks related to primary schools

This is a list of attacks related to primary schools. These are attacks that have occurred on school property or related primarily to school issues or events. A broad definition of the word attacks is used for this list so as to include public attacks or one's self (suicide).

July 26, 1764 Franklin County, Pennsylvania, United States Four Lenape warriors 10–11 dead, 2 injured 10–11 2 Enoch Brown school massacre. On July 26, 1764, four Lenape American Indian warriors entered a log schoolhouse of white settlers in what is now Franklin County, Pennsylvania, near present-day Greencastle. Inside were the schoolmaster, Enoch Brown, and twelve young students. Brown pleaded with the warriors to spare the children before being shot and scalped. The warriors then began to tomahawk and scalp the children, killing nine or ten of them (reports vary). Two children who had been scalped survived.[1]
September 28, 1850 West Chester, Pennsylvania, United States George Pharoah, 19 1 dead 1 At the Rocky Hill schoolhouse, students found their young teacher (about 18), Miss Rachael Sharpless shot dead in the doorway of the school. George Pharoah, 19 years old, shot her while hiding behind a tree as she was unlocking the door. He used a copy of the Saturday Evening Post in a wad to muffle the sound, where parts of the magazine was found at the scene and in his pockets.[2]
August 16, 1856 Florence, Alabama, United States 2 dead 2 The school master had a tame sparrow of which he was very fond, and had warned the students that if any of them killed it, they will die by his hands. By accident, or intentionally, one of the boys stepped on the bird and killed it. Alarmed by the threats, the boy was afraid to return to school, but the Master begged him to come back. He did so, and after the lessons were finished, he took the boy into a private room, and strangled him. Upon the boy's father hearing what had occurred, he loaded his gun and went and shot the schoolmaster dead.[3]
February 6, 1864 Ashland County, Ohio, United States George W. Longfelt 1 dead 1 The school teacher of the Pyfer's School House, George W. Longfelt shot and instantly killed student Alfred Desem, and fled.[4]
February 16, 1867 Knights Ferry, California, United States 2 dead 2 Mr. McGinnis was shot and killed by his daughter's teacher after McGinnis threatened the teacher for expelling his daughter from school. When McGinnis's son learned of this, he went to the school and killed the teacher.[5]
June 8, 1867 New York City, New York, United States 13-year-old boy 1 injured 1 At Public School No. 18, a 13-year-old boy brought a loaded pistol, without the knowledge of his parents or school-teachers, and shot and injured a classmate.[6]
December 22, 1868 Chattanooga, Tennessee, United States 3 dead 3 A boy who refused to be whipped and left school, returned with his brother and a friend, the next day to seek revenge on his teacher. Not finding the teacher at the school, they continued to his house, where a gun battle rang out, leaving three dead. Only the brother survived.[7]
January 27, 1871 Knoxville, Tennessee, United States 1 dead 1 John Roberts, a little boy of ten or twelve, accidentally had one of his eyes shot out at school and died.[8]
June 22, 1871 LaGrange County, Indiana, United States Chauncey Barnes 2 dead 2 Anna Dwight, the schoolmistress of Stone Lake Schoolhouse, is shot to death outside her schoolhouse by Chauncey Barnes, a rejected suitor. Barnes then committed suicide by shooting himself in the head several times.[9]

March 9, 1873 Salisbury, Maryland, United States Mr. Hall 2 dead 2 After school as Miss Shockley was walking with four small children, she was approached by a Mr. Hall and shot. The Schoolmaster ran out, but she was dead instantly. Hall threw himself under a train that night.[11]
January 26, 1876 San Francisco, California, United States 1 injured 1 A young boy at the Lincoln Primary School accidentally shot himself while playing with a pistol under his desk. His fingers were badly hurt and he received a flesh wound to his leg. The principal, Miss Kate Sullivan, sent him home in the hopes that his parents would teach him to be a little more careful when handling firearms.[12]
December 6, 1877 San Juan Capistrano, California, United States 1 dead 1 The schoolmaster committed suicide by shooting himself after hours. He wrote on the blackboard, "May this solve the problem".[13]
December 1880 Sacramento, California, United States Julia A. Finn As George E. Landers was teaching at the Willow Slough school house, Julia A. Finn drove up in a buggy and called out to him. When he came out to talk, Julia ask him to marry her, and he refused. Julia then took out a gun and fired three shots at him, but missed. She was then tried for attempted murder.[14]
December 1, 1881 Santa Monica, California, United States Mr. Williams 1 dead 1 While working late on the program for the children's concert at the school house, the school master O'Donnell, and one of the parent's got into an argument, the parent Williams pulled a gun and fatally shot O'Donnell in the back.[15]
December 22, 1881 Shelby County, Indiana, United States Charles J. Gregory 1 injured 1 Charles J. Gregory, a school teacher shot at a pupil, at close range because he refused to write on the a slate. The bullet missed the boy, but his face was filled with powder. The teacher was arrested with great excitement.[16]
February 14, 1883 Florence, Nebraska, United States Harbaugh 3 dead 3 As the children were playing, and throwing snowballs in the front yard of the Ponca Creek school house, a wagon pulled up with three young men and engaged in a snowball fight. When they were leaving, one of the men pointed his 45 caliber, and accidentally shot and killed three of the school girls. Harbaugh, the young man who shot surrendered himself.[17]
January 23, 1884 Sidney, Nebraska, 1 injured 1 A school boy accidentally shot himself in the hand while fooling around with a pistol. He had pointed the pistol at one of the school girls just moments earlier.[18]
February 28, 1884 Danville, Virginia, United States Wamack, 15 2 injured 2 As Wamack, a fifteen-year-old boy drove by a "negro" school house, he called out "school butter." The entire school emptied out and attacked him, several shot were fired at him, and he returned fire shooting two students.[19]
August 26, 1884 Markdale, Ontario, Canada William Norris, 28 1 dead, 1 injured 1 1 28-year-old teacher William Norris shot and wounded his assistant, a young woman named Fanny Ford, in his schoolhouse after she rejected his marriage proposal. Norris then committed suicide.[20][21][22]
June 12, 1887 Cleveland, Tennessee, United States Will Guess 1 dead 1 Will Guess went to the school and fatally shot Miss Irene Fann, his little sister's teacher, for whipping her the day before.[23]
May 17, 1889 Washington, District of Columbia, United States Oswald C. Allen 2 dead 2 Sarah E. Allen, a third grade teacher at the Jefferson school, is shot to death in front of her class by her estranged husband Oswald C. Allen, who then turned the gun on himself and committed suicide.[24]
April 24, 1890 Brazil, Indiana, United States Ben Corbery 1 injured 1 While the pupils of the Meridian Street School were at play, Ben Corbery drew a revolver and shot Cora Brubach, aged 10, seriously wounding her in the face. The reason for the assault was that the girl had informed the teacher of Ben's misconduct.[25]
January 20, 1891 Syracuse, New York, United States Wilber F. Baker 1 dead 1 In an abusive rage, Wilber F. Baker went to the Bassett Street School where his wife was teaching, entered the classroom and shot her five times, killing her. He was caught by police after a 40-mile chase.[26]
March 30, 1891 Liberty, Mississippi, United States 14 injured 14 During a school exhibition and concert given at the Parson Hill schoolhouse, just as the performances were starting in front of a large mixed audience of black people and white people, crowded with teachers, pupils, and spectators, a double barreled shotgun, heavily charged with shot, was fired into the assemblage by an unknown assailant. 14 people were wounded, some seriously.[27]
April 9, 1891 Newburgh, New York, United States James Foster, 70 5 injured 5 70-year-old James Foster fired a shotgun at a group of male students in the playground of St. Mary's Parochial School, causing minor injuries to several of the students.[28]
December 21, 1898 New York City, New York, United States Samuel Jacobson, 8 1 injured 1 Samuel Jacobson, student at Grammar School 85, stabbed his 8-year-old classmate Hans Pietze with a pocketknife after he fell over the latter's foot. Both students were said to have quarreled often before.[29]
December 28, 1898 Sioux City, Iowa, United States Harry Garvey 2 dead 2 Teacher, May Thomas was lured out of the schoolhouse by Harry Garvey who was devoted to her, but she had refused his further attentions. He then pulled a revolver out and shot her dead, then killed himself.[30]
May 12, 1900 Danbury, Connecticut, United States Herbert Horton 1 dead 1 After being repeatedly refused by Teacher Lillian Owen, Herbert Horton went to the schoolhouse and pleaded one last time. He then pulled out a revolver and demanded entry or he would kill himself. Miss Owen and pupils barricaded the door. Horton then shot himself in the chest.[31]
February 26, 1902 Camargo, Illinois, United States Fletcher R. Barnett 2 dead 2 Teacher Fletcher R. Barnett shot and killed another teacher, Eva C. Wiseman, in front of her class at a school near Camargo, Illinois. After shooting at a pupil who came to help Miss Wiseman and wounding himself in a failed suicide attempt he waited in the classroom until a group of farmers came to lynch him. He then ran out of the school building, grabbed a shotgun from one of the farmers and shot himself, before running away and leaping into a well where he finally drowned. The incident was likely sparked by Wiseman's refusal to marry Barnett.[32]
October 6, 1902 Droyssig, Austria-Hungary ..., 40 4 dead, 3 injured 4 3 A schoolmaster killed three children and injured another three, when he suddenly drew a revolver from his desk and shot at his pupils, before he himself was lynched by infuriated villagers.[33]
October 9, 1902 Altona, Manitoba, Canada Henry I. Toews, 33 2 dead, 5 injured 2 5 After meeting with the board of trustees for showing extreme malice towards some of his pupils, school teacher Henry Toews shot the three school trustees and three of their children, one of them fatally, before fleeing from the school ground and shooting himself in the head. He died of this wound on January 19, 1903.[34][35]
October 10, 1906 Cleveland, Ohio, United States Harry Smith, 25 2 dead 2 Harry Smith shot and killed 22-year-old teacher Mary Shepard at South Euclid School after she had rejected him. Smith escaped and committed suicide in a barn near his home two hours later.[36]
March 23, 1907 Carmi, Illinois, United States George Nicholson 1 dead 1 George Nicholson shot and killed John Kurd at a schoolhouse outside of Carmi, Illinois during a school rehearsal. The motive for the shooting was Kurd making a disparaging remark about Nicholson's daughter during her recital.[37]
March 20, 1908 Los Angeles, California, United States Ruth Sargent, 12 1 dead 1 Ruth Sargent, a 12-year-old student at the San Pedro Street School, shot herself. She asked permission to leave the class in the middle of a lesson, but the teacher refused. So, she got up pointed a gun at the teacher and left the class room, went down the stairs and shot herself. The students and teachers rushed to her side and she said "I shot myself and no one is to blame." The bullet entered the left breast, missed the heart, perforated the lung, and lodged near the spine. Her father said she was distraught over the workload at school.[38]
February 12, 1909 San Francisco, California, United States Demetri Treschenko, 48 1 dead, 1 injured 1 1 10-year-old Dorothy Malakanoff was shot and killed by 48-year-old Demetri Treschenko as she arrived at her school in San Francisco. Treschenko then shot himself in a failed suicide attempt. Treschenko was reportedly upset that Malakanoff refused to elope with him.[39]
June 10, 1909 Trinidad, Colorado, United States Walter Harris, 11 1 dead 1 Walter Harris, 11 years old student accidentally shot and killed his teacher B. C. Briggs in the head while on a school field trip.[40]
January 12, 1910 New York City, New York, United States 1 dead, 1 injured 1 1 "A black bearded maniac drew an automatic pistol" and fired five shots into a crowd of the Harlem School boys. The kids were taunting him, so he shot into the crowd of children. Robert Lomas, aged 6, was hit in the heart and died instantly, Arthur Shively also aged 6 was shot through the left lung and critically wounded.[41]
January 10, 1912 Warrenville, Illinois, United States Sylvester E. Adams 2 dead 2 Sylvester E. Adams shot and killed teacher Edith Smith after she rejected his advances. Adams then shot and killed himself. The incident took place in a schoolhouse about a mile outside of Warrenville after the students had been dismissed for the day.[42]
January 17, 1913 Honolulu, Hawaii, United States Manuel Fernandez 2 dead, 7 injured 2 7 While the children in the schoolhouse were quietly seated, Manuel Fernandez entered the classroom and shot his wife, the teacher, Johanna Fernandez killing her with a shotgun. Seven of the children were hit by the scattering buckshot, dangerously wounding one. He then shot and killed himself. Jealousy is quoted as the motive.[43]
June 20, 1913 Bremen, Germany Heinz Schmidt, 30 5 dead, 23 injured 5 23 Bremen school shooting. 30-year-old unemployed teacher Heinz Schmidt entered St.-Marien-Schule and indiscriminately shot at students and teachers, killing four students and injuring 23 other people. Another student died from injuries she sustained while falling down a flight of stairs while trying to escape the shooting. A furious crowd outside the school eventually subdued Schmidt and he was arrested by police.[44]
March 27, 1919 Lodi Township, Michigan, United States Robert Warner 1 dead 1 19-year-old teacher Irma Casler was shot and killed in her classroom at Rentschler school in Lodi Township, Michigan by Robert Warner, apparently because she had rejected his advances.[45][46]
October 19, 1923 Waikino, New Zealand John Christopher Higgins 2 dead, 8 injured 2 8 John Higgins, a middle-aged firewood dealer originating from Canada, seeking revenge for the alleged killing of three of his horses by other Waikino residents, entered the local public school armed with a revolver, a knife and explosives. After shooting headmaster Robert Reid, who had tried to persuade him to spare the children, Higgins went to the classroom, where he fatally shot two boys, aged 9 and 13 years, and wounded four other pupils by gunshots. Additionally two children received injuries while attempting to escape. Higgins was arrested after a shoot-out with police in which he wounded a policeman, and sentenced to death four months later, which was then commuted to life imprisonment, as it was found that he had been insane at the time of the shooting.[47][48]
May 18, 1927 Bath, Michigan,

Andrew Kehoe, 55 45 dead, 58 injured 45 58 Bath School disaster. School board member Andrew Kehoe set up a series of explosions in the Bath Consolidated School. Before blowing up the school Kehoe murdered his wife and set fire to his farmhouse. As townspeople responding to the explosions at the school started relief efforts, Kehoe then detonated his shrapnel-filled vehicle outside the school. The bombings constituted the deadliest act of mass murder in any type of school setting in U.S. history.
May 22, 1930 Ringe, Minnesota, United States Douglas Petersen, 24 1 dead 1 Margaret Wegman, 20-year-old teacher at the local rural school, was shot and killed in the school by 24-year-old Douglas Petersen.[49]
May 28, 1931 Duluth, Minnesota, United States 1 dead 1 Katherine McMillen, 24-year-old teacher at the Howard Gensen rural school near Duluth, was accidentally shot and killed by a revolver brought to school by a pupil.[50]
February 15, 1933 Downey, California, United States Vernon Blythe, 35 3 dead 3 Dr. Vernon Blythe shot and killed his wife Eleanor, as well as his 8-year-old son Robert at Gallatin grammar school and committed suicide after firing three more shots at his other son Vernon. His wife, who had been a teacher at the school, had filed for divorce the week before.[51]
February 2, 1934 Harlan, Iowa, United States Herman Seick, 28 2 dead 2 Margaret Graves, 23, school teacher at Monroe School No. 2, was shot to death in front of her 20 students by former suitor Herman Seick, 28. Seick then took his own life in the classroom.[52]
March 27, 1935 Medora, North Dakota, United States Harry McGill, 28 1 dead 1 Emily Hartl, 24-year-old teacher at the Manlon school northwest of Medora, was shot and killed at the school by 28-year-old Harry McGill, a former suitor.[53]
September 12, 1940 Uniontown, Pennsylvania, United States William Kuhns, 35 1 dead, 1 injured 1 1 29-year-old teacher Carolyn Dellamea is shot to death inside her third grade classroom by 35-year-old William Kuhns. Kuhns then shot himself in the chest in a failed suicide attempt. Kuhns had reportedly been courting Dellamea for over a year but the relationship was ended when Dellamea discovered that Kuhns was already married.[54]
October 25, 1940 Cincinnati, Ohio, United States Guy Willie Ponder, 27 1 dead 1 10-year-old Clarence Stevens, a third grade pupil at Holy Name School, was stabbed to death inside a storeroom at the school by 27-year-old Guy Willie Ponder.[55]
May 9, 1944 New York City, New York, United States Madeline Kirkland, 11

1 dead 1 Nine-year-old Margaret Patton was attacked and killed at PS 119 in Harlem by two fellow students. One student held Patton's arms while the other stabbed her to death. Police later arrested 11-year-old Madeline Kirkland, who was charged with murder, and 13-year-old Eileen Foster, who was charged with juvenile delinquency.[56]
February 5, 1947 Madill, Oklahoma, United States Ellis Laird, 62 2 dead 2 1st grade teacher Jessie Laird, 40, was shot to death in her classroom, during recess by her estranged husband, Ellis Laird, 62. Laird then fatally shot himself.[57]
October 10, 1956 Terrazzano, Italy Arturo Santato, 23

Egidio Santato, 21

1 dead, 4 injured 1 4 Arturo Santato, a former inmate of an asylum in Aversa, and his brother Egidio went into a school in Terrazzano, near Milan, carrying guns, dynamite and acid and took 96 children and three teachers hostage for about six hours. They demanded 200 millon lira for the release of their hostages or they would kill them. Using the children as shields they fired shots at people outside the school, killing one person and injuring another three. The hostage crisis ended when one teacher tackled Egidio, grabbed a knife and stabbed him in the head. The attack distracted the brothers long enough to give police time to storm the classroom without endangering the children's lives.[58][59]

Paul Harold Orgeron, 49 6 dead, 19 injured 6 19 Poe Elementary School attack. The morning that Paul Orgeron's second-grade son is denied enrollment, he detonates an explosive on the school playground during recess, killing himself; his son, Dusty; a teacher; a custodian and two seven-year-old boys. The school principal and 18 students aged six to ten are injured, many seriously.
February 2, 1960 Hartford City, Indiana, United States Leonard O. Redden, 44 3 dead 3 Principal Leonard Redden shot and killed two teachers with a shotgun at William Reed Elementary School in Hartford City, Indiana, before fleeing into a remote forest, where he committed suicide.[60][61]
June 7, 1960 Blaine, Minnesota, United States Lester Betts, 40 1 dead 1 Lester Betts, a 40-year-old mail-carrier, walked into the office of 33-year-old principal Carson Hammond and shot him to death with a 12-gauge shotgun.[62]
April 20, 1961 Chicago, Illinois, United States Lee Arthur Hester, 14 1 dead 1 Teacher Josephine Keane, 45, is sexually assaulted and stabbed to death inside a storeroom at Lewis-Champlin elementary school in Chicago. Lee Arthur Hester, a 14-year-old student, is later convicted of the murder and sentenced to 55 years in prison.[63]
June 11, 1964 Cologne, Germany Walter Seifert, 42 11 dead, 22 injured 11 22 Cologne school massacre. Armed with an insecticide sprayer converted into a flamethrower, a lance, and a homemade mace, 42-year-old Walter Seifert entered the Katholische Volksschule in Cologne, Germany, and opened fire on female students playing in the courtyard. He then knocked in classroom windows with his mace and fired inside. Eight children and two teachers died, and twenty children and two teachers suffered injuries of severe burns. After swallowing poisonous insecticide E605, Seifert died the following day, while in custody.
April 8, 1970 Bahr el-Baqar, Sharqiyya, Egypt Israeli Air Force 46 dead, 50+ injured 46 50+ Bahr el-Baqar massacre. A bombing occurred during the War of Attrition, where the Israeli airforce carried out a raid on the Egyptian village of Bahr el-Baqar, in the eastern province of Sharqiyya, the raid resulted in the destruction of a primary school full of school children. Of the 130 school children who attended the school, 46 were killed, and over 50 wounded. The Israelis claimed that they believed the target was a military installation.
May 8, 1970 Avivim, Israel Palestinian militants 12 dead, 25 injured 12 25 Avivim school bus massacre. Palestinian terrorists belonging to the PFLP-GC attacked the community school bus of Avivim, killing nine children and three adults and wounding 25 other people, by firing two bazooka shells at the bus.[64]
November 8, 1971 Grove, Oklahoma, United States James Underwood 1 dead 1 Principal T.J. Melton is shot to death by James Underwood, a school custodian.[65]
January 5, 1972 Washington, District of Columbia, United States James A. Brooks 1 dead 1 Fifth-grade teacher Margaret Brooks, 57, was shot to death in front of her students by her estranged husband James A. Brooks.[66]
January 17, 1974 Chicago, Illinois, United States Steven Guy, 14 1 dead, 3 injured 1 3 14-year-old Steven Guy, apparently angry about being transferred to a social adjustment center, entered Clara W. Barton Elementary School in Chicago with a revolver and a pistol and killed the principal and wounded three others before he was seized by a teacher when both his guns jammed.
May 15, 1974 Ma'alot, Israel DFLP, PLO 26 children killed, 60+ wounded, 3 hostage takers killed 29 60+ Ma'alot massacre. A group of DFLP militants took around 90 school children hostage on the 15. May, 1974, at "Netiv Meir", an elementary school in Ma'alot, a community in northern Israel. Before the deadline at 6:00 p.m., the school was stormed by Israeli special forces, who killed all the hostage-takers. 26 hostages had been killed.
February 24, 1975 Penns Grove, New Jersey, United States David Gary, 24 1 dead, 1 injured 1 1 David Gary walked into a second grade classroom of St. James Elementary School where he shot and injured 25-year-old teacher Kathleen Flynn. He then killed the school principal, 38-year-old Rev. Thomas J. Quinlan, when he came to investigate.[67][68]
November 10, 1976 Detroit, Michigan, United States Al J. Lewis, 46 1 dead 1 English teacher Betty McCaster, 46, was shot to death by her estranged husband in front of her first grade class at Burt Elementary School in northwest Detroit.[69]
October 10, 1977 San Juan, Trinidad and Tobago 5 dead 5 A man running through the halls of El Socorro public school killed four children with a machete, as well as a woman outside the school when trying to escape. He was later arrested by police.[70]
April 26, 1978 Dallas, Texas, United States ..., 56 1 dead 1 Woodrow Porter, 38, a janitor at Paul Dunbar Elementary School, was shot to death by the 56-year-old grandmother of an 8-year-old that was allegedly spanked by Porter earlier.[71]
January 29, 1979 San Diego, California, United States Brenda Ann Spencer, 16 2 dead, 9 injured 2 9 Cleveland Elementary School shooting: Armed with a .22-rifle, 16-year-old Brenda Ann Spencer opened fire at Cleveland Elementary School, killing two adults and wounding eight children and one police officer. Spencer was later apprehended after a six-hour stand-off, and she was asked of her motive for the killing, to which she shrugged and infamously replied "I don't like Mondays. This livens up the day."
March 20, 1980 Dallas, Texas, United States 1 dead 1 Rosie Pearson, 49, fifth grade teacher, was shot to death in the hallway of J. Leslie Patton School, by an unknown assailant.[72]
June 3, 1982 Shamshuipo, Hong Kong Li Chihang, 28 5 dead, 43 injured 5 43 Anne Anne Kindergarten stabbing. After stabbing his mother and sister to death and injuring two bystanders, 28-year-old Li Chihang entered Anne Anne Kindergarten and started stabbing people. Three children died and 40 other people were injured in the attack. Li was arrested after being shot by a police officer.[73] He was found to be insane and was sentenced to being detained at a mental institution.
August 13, 1983 Chiang Rai Province, Thailand Suthat Wannasarn, 43 3 dead, 3 injured 3 3 3 children were hacked to death and two others wounded in a nursery in Chiang Rai Province, when 43-year-old Suthat Wannasarn attacked them with a sword and a large stick. Wannasarn was later arrested by police after being shot in the abdomen.[74]
February 24, 1984 Los Angeles, California, United States Tyrone Mitchell, 28 2 dead, 13 injured 2 13 At 2:23 p.m. 28-year-old Tyrone Mitchell began shooting at students leaving 49th Street Elementary School in Los Angeles with a 12-gauge shotgun and a rifle from a second-floor window of a building across the street. He killed a 10-year-old girl and wounded 11 other children, as well as a schoolyard supervisor and a passer-by. When police finally stormed the building they found Mitchell's body, who had killed himself with the shotgun. Mitchell had lost his parents, grandmother, brother and four sisters in the Jonestown massacre.[75][76][77]

A man in his 60's boarded a school bus and shot the bus driver, Charles Albert Poland Jr., 66. Poland was killed. The gunman abducted a 6-year-old child and held him hostage in an underground bunker. The gunman, Jimmy Lee Dykes, was shot to death by police several days later.[169]
April 5, 2013 Gatineau, Quebec, Canada Robert Charron 2 dead 2 Neil Galliou, 38, was shot and killed at the Les Racines de vie Montessori daycare by Robert Charron, who then committed suicide. There were 53 children present at the school at the time of the shooting.[170]
August 20, 2013 Decatur, Georgia, United States Michael Brandon Hill, 20 (suspect) 0 injured 0 A gunman with an AK-47 fired six shots inside the front office of Ronald E. McNair Discovery Learning Academy, an elementary school. After the gunman fired the shots, he barricaded himself in the office and police at the scene returned fire. Nobody was injured. The gunman surrendered in the office and was apprehended. Children had to leave the building and were being guided to a corner of a field, where they were picked up by their parents. The alleged gunman is a 20-year-old male named Michael Brandon Hill.[171][172][173][174]
September 9, 2013 Guilin, Guangxi province, China Unknown 2 dead, 44 injured 2 dead 44 injured Two adults were killed outside Balijie Primary School, and 44 others were injured after a homemade explosive detonated. Most of the injured were schoolchildren. One of those killed is the bomber, who was riding his motorcycle during the explosion.[175][176][177]
October 4, 2013 Spencer, Massachusetts, United States 7-year-old student 1 injured 1 A 7-year-old student was stabbed by another 7-year-old student at Wire Village School. The victim was hospitalized for serious but non-life-threatening injuries.[178]
October 6, 2013 Qabak, Iraq Unknown 16 dead, 90 injured 16 dead 90 injured 12 children and the school principal were killed in a suicide bombing at an elementary school in the village of Qabak. Two police officers in an adjacent police station were also killed. 90 people were injured.[179]
October 11, 2013 Long Beach, California, United States Steven Brown (suspect) 1 dead 1 Teacher Kelleye Taylor was stabbed to death as she was watching two dozen students at a playground in a park adjacent to the Huntington Academy, where she taught the students at. The suspect was later arrested at the mall. The suspect is Steven Brown, who is the father of Kelleye Taylor's grandchildren. He is charged with murder and held on $1 million bail.[180]
October 17, 2013 Jacksonville, Arkansas, United States Nicholas John Miller, 22 (suspect) No injuries A man with a knife hijacked a school bus in Jacksonville, taking 11 Pinewood Elementary School students and their bus driver on a detour that police ended in Cabot after a 10-mile chase. Police stopped the hijacking 20 minutes after it began. The suspect, 22-year-old Nicholas John Miller, was charged with a felony count of vehicle piracy, 12 felony counts of kidnapping, and two felony counts of aggravated assault.[181][182]

May 30, 2014 Oakland, California, United States Hasseemah Diemi, 39 (charged) 1 injured 1 A 9-year-old girl was attacked with a hammer at Lafayette Elementary School. The girl was hospitalized for her injuries. A 39-year-old woman, who was a class volunteer at the school, was arrested at the scene and charged with assault with a deadly weapon.[185]
August 3, 2014 Rafah, Gaza strip Israeli military 10 dead, dozens injured 10 The UN-run school was sheltering up to 3,000 men, women and children from the Israeli attacks in the area when it was struck by an Israeli missile. The UN had advised the IDF 17 times of the presence of the civilians in the school. Four children aged 5 to 12 were amongst the dead.[186][187]

September 26, 2014 Guilin, Guangxi province, China Suspect, 56 4 dead 4 Four children were stabbed to death as they were walking to their school. A 56-year-old suspect is wanted.[189]
December 16, 2014 Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan 7 members of Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan 141+ dead 114 2014 Peshawar school attack. Seven gunmen of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan stormed into The Army Public School, killing at least 141 students and staff members with guns and explosives. 114 were injured. It was the worst terrorist attack in Pakistan.
