List of association football players with 50 or more goals in a season

Note: This list is based on incomplete data and should be taken as such, it misses a number of south American footballers and does not include full data on several European footballers whose data only include league goals, most notable among these is the Slavia Prague player Josef Bican who beside playing in the Bohemia and Moravia protectorate league during world war 2 also simultaneously played in the Czech Cup, Mitropa Cup and Bohemia Cup for an additional 100 goals not included anywhere in his goal data. In 11 seasons for Slavia Prague Josef Bican scored well over 500 goals in official matches and most likely passed the 50 goal mark in every season from 1938 through 1944. Several other European footballers have reach 50 goals in a season when factoring in their cup goals which for some reason is never included, these include several German, Austrian and Hungarian fotballers, a recent example would be welsh footballer Marc Lloyd Williams who scored 47 league goals in 2001-02 season but an additional 19 goals in other competitions for a total of 66 goals, only mentioned in newspaper articles, another example would be Bolivian footballer Joaquín Botero who scored 49 goals in the Bolivian league but who's goals in Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana the same season are not included.

The following is a list of association football players with 50 or more goals in a season. The milestone is an extremely rare one; in the history of the sport, the author of this list have only been able to find 25 players of 14 nationalities that have accomplished the feat in the top division, with a total of 10 leagues in the world represented.

Only nine players have scored 50 goals on multiple occasions, with only one player doing so on five occasions: Cristiano Ronaldo, who accomplished the feat in five consecutive seasons (2010–11 to 2014–15), all while playing for Spanish team Real Madrid.[1] Ronaldo's rival Lionel Messi scored the most goals ever in a season when he scored 73 goals for Spanish team Barcelona in 2011–12, while Archie Stark is the only other player to ever break the 70 goal barrier, doing so 87 years earlier in 1924–25 for American team Bethlehem Steel. The 60 goal barrier has been reached on a further seven occasions.

The first to achieve the 50 goal milestone was Duncan Walker, scoring 56 goals for Scottish team St. Mirren in the 1921–22 season, while only Mário Jardel has scored 50 for two different teams, doing so for Portuguese teams FC Porto and Sporting CP.
