Beyoncé performing during the I Am... World Tour

Beyoncé is an American singer, songwriter, dancer and actress. Born and raised in Houston, Texas, she enrolled in performing arts schools and was first exposed to singing and dancing competitions as a child. Beyoncé rose to fame in the late 1990s as the lead singer of Destiny's Child, one of the world's best-selling girl groups of all time. Since 2003, she has released five solo albums, garnering critical and commercial success. Beyoncé' work has earned her numerous awards and accolades, including 20 Grammy Awards, 18 MTV Video Music Awards, two Legend Awards, a Billboard Millennium Award, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (with Destiny's Child). As a prominent figure within popular culture during the early 21st century, Beyoncé's contribution to music, film, fashion and dance has influenced many other artists.

Influences for Beyoncé

Beyoncé considers Michael Jackson to be one of her greatest influences.[1] Following the death of Michael Jackson, Beyoncé commented:

The incomparable Michael Jackson has made a bigger impact on music than any other artist in the history of music. He was magic. He was what we all strive to be. He will always be the King of Pop. For anyone who has ever seen, felt, or heard his art, we are all honoured to have been alive in this generation to experience the magic of Michael Jackson. I love you Michael."[2]

Beyoncé has continuously been named the "heir-apparent to Michael Jackson".[3]

Beyoncé credits Mariah Carey's singing and her song "Vision of Love" as influencing her to begin practising vocal runs.[4] Furthermore, Beyoncé has revealed that Madonna inspired her to take control of her own career. She commented: "I think about Madonna and how she took all of the great things she achieved and started the label and developed other artists. But there are not enough of those women."[5] Beyoncé has also been inspired by Whitney Houston[6] whom she met at the age of fifteen. She admired Houston's soulful voice as well as her vibrato, her cadence, her vocal control.[7] Beyoncé credits Houston for having "opened doors and provided a blueprint for all [female singers]".[7] Her other musical influences include Cher,[8] Diana Ross,[9] Tina Turner,[10] Prince,[11] Lauryn Hill,[9] Sade Adu,[12] Mary J. Blige,[13] Janet Jackson,[14] Anita Baker, Rachelle Ferrell,[9] Patti LaBelle.
