List of ants of Australia

The bulldog ant Myrmecia brevinoda is the largest ant in the world in terms of average worker size[1]

The ant fauna of Australia is large and diverse. As of 1999, Australia and its external territories represent 1,275 described species (subspecies included) divided into 103 genera and 10 subfamilies.[2] No publication since 1999 has estimated the current diversity of Australia's ant fauna today, although it has considerably increased in size as the total amount of subfamilies in Australia today is around 12. Very few species in the country are known to be invasive.

Australia is home to two-thirds of the worlds subfamilies, one-third of known genera, 15% of all described species, and some genera found in Australia can be found nowhere else or they are found in neighboring countries instead. Australia's ant diversity is smaller than Central America, South America and Southeast Asia, it has roughly the same number of genera and species as the Orient and surpasses the amount of ants known in Europe, North America, Northern Asia and Northern Africa.[3] The total amount of species known in Australia could possibly be over 6,500, with only one in five ants being described.[4]

Subfamilies

In 1999, 10 ant subfamilies were known to reside in Australia, but some of these subfamilies were later synonymised under the subfamily Dorylinae.[3][5] Today, 12 subfamilies are known to occur in Australia, including Amblyoponinae, Dolichoderinae, Dorylinae, Ectatomminae, Formicinae, Heteroponerinae, Leptanillinae, Myrmeciinae, Myrmicinae, Ponerinae, Proceratiinae and Pseudomyrmecinae.[6]

The subfamily Myrmicinae is the largest in Australia in terms of both number of genera and species, as well as the subfamily Formicinae, which is also one of the most common subfamily of ants to be encountered.[7][8] The subfamily Myrmeciinae consists of two genera which are only found in Australia, with the exception of a single species native to New Caledonia.[9] Only a single species of the subfamily Leptanillinae is known from Australia.[6]

Acropyga

Acropyga acutiventris

Acropyga is a genus of small Formicinae ants (smaller than 3.5 millimetres (0.14 in) in length) containing 42 species. Ants of this genus are distributed globally, nesting underground or found in rotten logs or bark. Only three species in this genus are known to reside in Australia.

Adlerzia

Adlerzia is a genus of ants in the subfamily Myrmicinae, containing a single species found in Australia only, which is infrequently encountered and nests under stones and soil. It is a polymorphic species that ranges in size.

Aenictus

Aenictus is a large genus of army ant in the subfamily Dorylinae. The genus contains 181 species that are mostly found in the Old World tropics and subtropics. These ants carry out raids to catch their prey and live a nomadic lifestyle.

Leptanilla

Leptanilla is a genus of ants in the subfamily Leptanillinae, containing 44 species. Many species of this genus are found in Africa, consisting of a few hundred workers per colony, where they will construct colonies under soil. Only a single species within this genus has been described in Australia. Workers of this species are approximately 1.3 to 1.5 millimetres (0.051 to 0.059 in) long and pale yellow in colour.

Myopias

Myopopone

Myopopone is a genus of ants in the subfamily Amblyoponinae containing two species, one of which is only found in fossils. They can be found in Indo-Australian regions that nest under wood or tree bark in rain forests. They are capable of inflicting a painful sting.

Myrmecia

Myrmecia gulosa

Myrmecia (also known as bulldog ants or bull ants) is a genus of ants in the subfamily Myrmeciinae, containing 93 species. They are among the largest ants in the world, with the smallest species at lengths of 15 mm (0.59 in) and the largest ones at over 40 mm (1.6 in). These ants are only known from Australia with a single exception of one species from New Caledonia. They are distributed nationwide and are infamously known for their aggression, well developed vision and powerful stings. On a few occasions, these stings have caused several deaths in humans and has earned one species the title as the most dangerous ant in the world.[107]
