List of York City F.C. managers

Gary Mills, whose tenure as York City manager spanned 2010 to 2013

York City Football Club is an English association football club based in York, North Yorkshire. They appointed Jock Collier as their first official manager in July 1928. Collier initially joined the club as player-manager, but was forced to retire from playing due to a broken ankle. He left the club in May 1930 and managerial duties were carried out by club secretary George Sherrington. Collier, however, was re-appointed as manager in 1933, helping the club establish themselves in the Football League.[1] Charlie Spencer died during his period as manager and Jimmy McCormick was appointed as his successor.[2] However, following his resignation, the club went through a period of 18 months without an official manager, with trainer Tom Lockie and secretary George Sherrington looking after first-team affairs.[3] However, this period was York's most successful from a playing perspective,[3] during which the team reached the semi-final of the FA Cup in the 1954–55 season.[4]

The club had failed to win any honours until the 1983–84 season, when, under the management of Denis Smith, the club won the Football League Fourth Division with a record 101 points.[4][5] York won the Football League Third Division play-offs in the 1992–93 season and in the following season were beaten in the play-off semi-final of the Football League Second Division.[4] John Ward managed York for the majority of the 1992–93 season, but Alan Little took over in March 1993 and managed the team in their play-off semi-final appearance the following season.[6]

The 2004–05 season was York's first in the Conference National, during which the club had three different managers. Colin Walker was appointed as manager in December 2007 after initially taking over on a caretaker basis in November when Billy McEwan was dismissed.[7][8] He was himself sacked a year later in November 2008, with youth-team coach Neil Redfearn taking over as caretaker manager.[9] He was succeeded by former Port Vale manager Martin Foyle,[10] who led the team to the 2009 FA Trophy Final and the 2010 Conference Premier play-off Final.[11][12] Foyle resigned in September 2010 with York 15th in the table 10 games into the 2010–11 season and assistant manager Andy Porter took over as caretaker manager.[13] After four games in charge Porter left the club and youth team coach Steve Torpey took over as player-caretaker manager.[14][15][16] Tamworth manager Gary Mills, the current incumbent, was eventually appointed.[17] In his first full season in charge Mills led York to Wembley victories in the 2012 FA Trophy Final and the 2012 Conference Premier play-off Final, thus earning promotion to League Two, with the club's eight-year Football League exile coming to a close.[18] Mills was sacked on 2 March 2013 with the team sitting four points above the relegation zone following an 11-match run without a win;[19] former Northern Ireland manager Nigel Worthington was swiftly appointed as his successor.[20] Worthington guided York to safety from relegation before leading them to the League Two play-offs in the 2013–14 season, being beaten 1–0 on aggregate in the semi-final by Fleetwood Town.[21][22] However, with the team one place above the relegation zone he resigned as manager on 13 October 2014 and former Scunthorpe United manager Russ Wilcox was appointed as his successor two days later.[21][23]
