List of South Park episodes

South Park is an American adult animated comedy television series created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone for Comedy Central. The series originated from a pair of animated shorts titled The Spirit of Christmas, and the first episode of South Park originally aired on August 13, 1997 on Comedy Central. A total of 257 episodes have aired so far during the series' run. Comedy Central renewed South Park through 2016, bringing the show to 20 seasons.[1]

Intended for mature audiences, the show has become famous for its crude language and dark, surreal humor that lampoons a wide range of topics. The story revolves around four boys—Stan Marsh, Kyle Broflovski, Eric Cartman, and Kenny McCormick—and their bizarre adventures in and around the eponymous Colorado town. The show remains Comedy Central's highest rated and is the network's second-longest-running program, behind The Daily Show.

Each episode except the very first one, which was produced by cutout animation, is created with software that emulates the paper-cutout technique. Parker and Stone continue to perform most of the voice acting, and Parker is the primary writer and director. Except for the earliest seasons, each episode is typically written and produced during the week preceding its broadcast. Each episode is assigned a production code number. However, episodes sometimes air out of order, due to extra production-time requirements, scheduling considerations, or other reasons.[2] The later seasons of the show regularly consist of 14 episodes, with a run of seven episodes airing in spring and another seven episodes in autumn. In 2013, Parker and Stone decided to cut the number of episodes per season from 14 to 10, beginning with the seventeenth season.[3]

Besides the main series itself, originally-produced South Park segments have appeared in other works, such as sketches for talk shows and award ceremonies. In 1999, South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut, a full-length musical film, debuted in theaters. The eleventh season three-part "Imaginationland" story arc was also released as a combined direct-to-video film in 2008. South Park seasons are regularly released on DVD, and starting with the twelfth season, on Blu-ray Disc.

The original version of the show's pilot episode, "Cartman Gets an Anal Probe". The pilot was created entirely by construction paper cutout animation by Parker, Stone, and animation director Eric Stough in mid-1996. The unaired version of the pilot was 26 minutes long, which was too long to air. The creators had to cut about 10 minutes of material, and add back another three minutes of computer animation, in order to tie up the changed storyline.[5][6]

Never aired on television but released on DVD, online, and shown in 2011 during the "Year of the Fan" panel at San Diego Comic-Con.

The idea for South Park originated in 1992 when Trey Parker and Matt Stone, students at the University of Colorado, met in a film class. The two created a low-budget, crudely made, Christmas-related animated short, often called "Jesus vs. Frosty". The film featured prototypes of the main characters of South Park, including Cartman, Stan, Kyle and Kenny.[101]
