Sailor Moon Crystal, known in Japan as Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal (美少女戦士セーラームーンCrystal Bishōjo Senshi Sērā Mūn Kurisutaru), is a 2014 original net animation series produced by Toei Animation and directed by Munehisa Sakai, produced in commemoration of the twentieth anniversary of the shōjo manga series Sailor Moon.[1] Instead of remaking the 1992–97 anime series preceding it, Toei produced Crystal as a reboot of Sailor Moon and intends to be a more faithful adaptation of Naoko Takeuchi's original manga,[1][2][3] omitting much of the original material from the first series.[4] The story focuses on Usagi Tsukino, a young girl who is granted the power to become the titular character and is joined by fellow Sailor Guardians in search of Princess Serenity and the Legendary Silver Crystal.[5]
The series, which is planned for 26 episodes, began streaming worldwide on Niconico from July 5, 2014, with new episodes being released twice a month.[6][7] The first episode had an advanced screening on June 30, 2014 to celebrate Usagi's birthday.[8][9] The first limited edition Blu-ray box set was released in Japan on October 15, 2014, with the regular Blu-ray and DVD compilations set for release the following month; individual volumes are to be released monthly.[10][11][12] In May 2014, Viz Media licensed Crystal for an English-language release in North America,[13] and is simulcasting the series on Neon Alley, Hulu, and Crunchyroll to coincide with the worldwide streaming.[14][15][16] Viz also premiered the first episode as part of their "Sailor Moon Day" celebration at the Anime Expo Convention in Los Angeles.[17]
The music for Sailor Moon Crystal is composed by Yasuharu Takanashi. The series uses two pieces of theme music: an opening theme and an ending theme. The opening theme is titled "Moon Pride", and the ending theme is "Gekkō" (月虹, lit. "Moon Rainbow"), both performed by Momoiro Clover Z.[18][19]

The Queen then assures Usagi that Mamoru is still alive, as she had willed the Legendary Silver Crystal to save him, and asks her to think about the true power of the crystal before her time runs out. However, they are discovered by Beryl and once again put under her control, sending them to Earth to freeze Tokyo and obtain the crystal from Usagi. Recognising the four knights' true identities, Minako and the other Sailor Guardians combine their powers into the Sailor Planet Attack in order to try and free the knights from Beryl's control, but they escape before they can be purified.
