Prisoner intertitle (19791986)

Prisoner (Internationally known as Prisoner: Cell Block H in the United States and United Kingdom) is an Australian soap opera created by Reg Watson. It was produced by the Reg Grundy Organisation and screened on Network Ten from 1979 to 1986 for a total of 692 episodes over eight seasons.

Prisoner premiered on 26 February 1979 in Sydney and 27 February 1979 in Melbourne. and was initially devised as a sixteen-part mini series, however, it became an instant success and the decision was made to extend production of the series. Several of the original cast members agreed not to return following episode 16, including Margaret Laurence (Marilyn Mason) and Mary Ward (Jeanette 'Mum' Brooks), although, Ward did return for recurring roles. Carol Burns who played Franky Doyle, one of the series' first popular characters continued portraying the role until episode 20; Whereas, Kerry Armstrong (Lynn Warner) remained until halfway through the first season and Peta Toppano (Karen Travers) until the first episode of season two. Cast members such as Val Lehman (Bea Smith), Colette Mann (Doreen Anderson) and Sheila Florance (Lizzie Birdsworth) remained as part of the regular cast for a several years.

The series was known for its risqué storylines and was one of the first shows to feature such storylines concerning the use of hard drugs, homosexuality, corruption among the prison officers, rape, separation from families, and scenes of violence. The highlights of the first season featured the arrival of two prisoners who arrive at Wentworth Detention Centre, Karen Travers, who is convicted for the murder of her abusive husband and Lynn Warner, an innocent young woman who is accused of kidnapping and murdering a child, and the treatment she receives inside because of her conviction. The season also included the ongoing dispute between 'Queen' Bea Smith and Franky Doyle who fight for the position of top dog resulting in a prison riot which leads to the murder of the prison psychologist. Each season finale (or end-of-year cliffhanger) featured some of the most popular storylines in the series' history; the infamous 'tunnel escape' which was the setting for the season two finale (1980), is one of the most memorable storylines, however, the season four finale of 1982 (episode 326) has proved to be the most popular episode of Prisoner. It concerns the bitter rivalry between Bea and cold officer Joan 'The Freak' Ferguson (played by Maggie Kirkpatrick) who arrived halfway through 1982. Bea realizes that Ferguson is devious and must get rid of her, resulting in a showdown between the two with a fire set as a diversion at the end of the season. The episode was dubbed 'The Great Fire of Wentworth'.

For a majority of its run, Prisoner was screened on Network Ten at 20:30, due to the nature of the series, although for a brief period, the series began broadcasting at the earlier time of 19:30 at the beginning of season three (1981), therefore, episodes were censored for language, however, the adult-themed storylines remained intact. From episode 205 (season 3, episode 40) the series continued broadcasting at 20:30. When Prisoner ended on 11 December 1986, it later returned to Network Ten for a brief period in 1995 and BBC UKTV in 1997. Due to the success of the series, it returned to Australian screens once again on 7 March 2011 on Foxtel's subscription channel 111 Hits (rebranded 111 Greats) and has inspired a modern-day reimagining of the series, Wentworth which commenced broadcast on Foxtel channel SoHo from 2013. Prisoner has also seen enduring success internationally, as it debuted on American television on several networks from mid-1979, however, it is banned in Salt Lake City. It is extremely successful in the United Kingdom, showing on a number of regions on the ITV Network from the mid-1980s until the late 1990s and then a complete showing on Channel 5 from 1997 to 2001.

All 692 episodes of Prisoner have been released on DVD format in Australia and United Kingdom. All eight seasons have been made available over 40 volumes and a complete collection (which has since been re-released) in Australia and over 20 volumes in the UK. Three compilation DVD sets have been released prior to this; in Australia, three 'Best of' sets were made available. In the UK, only the first set was released and in the United States it was released as the '25th Anniversary Collector's Edition'. The second 'Best of' set was also released in the U.S. as 'Set 2'. Early VHS tapes were release in the UK from 1993, with the first 12 episodes made available over six tapes, a tape featuring 'The Great Fire of Wentworth' (episodes 326 & 327) and a behind-the-scenes tape 'The Great Escape'.

The following is a list of Prisoner episodes.

UK DVD

The DVD release of Prisoner: Cell Block H: Volume 1 containing the first 32 episodes of season one available since 2008 via Fremantle Home Entertainment.

In the United Kingdom, Prisoner: Cell Block H was released via Fremantle Home Entertainment, beginning late 2008. The complete series was released through 20 volumes containing 32 episodes per set for the first sixteen volumes; Volume 17 contains 40 episodes, Volume 18 and Volume 19 both contain 48 episodes and the final volume contains 44 episodes. The reason for the increased number of episodes on later sets was due to the fact that Fremantle wanted to keep exactly double the amount of episodes as the original Australian sets. The first 33 Australian releases contain 16 episodes per set; sets 34 to 39 containing 24 episodes per set and Volume 40 containing 20 episodes. Therefore, Fremantle in the UK doubled-up on episodes so that they could finish releasing by Volume 20.

In Australia, distribution company Shock Records began releasing the UK volumes in 2011, as their original volumes are now out of print. The final volume was released in early 2014.

In 1997, Prisoner commenced broadcast on Channel 5 and a complete run of the series was shown. The final episode was screened on Channel 5 in 2001.

The following is a list of the episodes which screened on ITV and Channel 5. The episodes on ITV refer to the UK premiere episodes, those of the Yorkshire region.
