JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (ジョジョの奇妙な冒険 JoJo no Kimyō na Bōken) is an anime television series produced by David Production based on the manga of the same name by Hirohiko Araki around the mysterious adventures of the Joestar family, beginning with an encounter involving Jonathan Joestar, his adoptive brother Dio Brando and a mysterious stone mask. The series is broadcast on Tokyo MX before entering syndication on 4 JNN stations, BS11, and Animax. The first season began on Tokyo MX on October 5, 2012, and concluded on April 5, 2013, adapting JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 1 Phantom Blood and Part 2 Battle Tendency. A second season began broadcast on April 4, 2014, covering Part 3 Stardust Crusaders. The series is licensed in North America by Viz Media.[1]
Each Part receives its own unique art style[2] and soundtrack.
- Part 1's opening theme is "JoJo" (ジョジョ~その血の運命~, "JoJo ~That Blood's Destiny~") performed by Hiroaki "Tommy" Tominaga, vocalist of Japanese "brass rock" band Bluff and the ending theme is British progressive rock band Yes' 1972 single "Roundabout", chosen as it was one of the many songs Hirohiko Araki said he had listened to while first writing Phantom Blood.[3] The score is composed by Hayato Matsuo, released on two albums titled Destiny (included as a bonus disc in the first Blu-ray volume box set) and Future (released as a standalone album); Future charted at number 95 on the Billboard Japan Top Albums charts[4] and peaked at 115 on the Oricon Weekly Album Charts.[5]
- Part 2's opening theme is the song "Bloody Stream" performed by Coda.[6] "Roundabout" remains as the ending theme. Its score is composed by Taku Iwasaki, and was released in two parts as Musik ("Music"), a separate CD on March 29, 2013, and as Leicht Verwendbar ("Light User"), a bonus disc for Blu-ray box set volume 4 on April 26, 2013. Musik debuted at number 63 on the Japan Top Albums charts[7] and at 89 on the Weekly Album Charts.[8]
- Season 2/Part 3's opening theme is "Stand Proud", released as a single on April 23, 2014, single release date and is performed by Jin Hashimoto. The ending theme is American band the Bangles' 1985 single "Walk Like an Egyptian". The score is composed by Yugo Kanno. For the Egypt arc, the opening theme was changed to "JoJo Sono Chi no Kioku ~end of THE WORLD~" performed by Tominaga, Coda, and Hashimoto together as the group JO☆STARS ~TOMMY,Coda,JIN~, to be released as a single on January 28, 2015. The ending theme also changed to the Pat Metheny Group's "Last Train Home" from their 1987 album Still Life (Talking).
