Juan Ramón Fernández Subercaseaux, a young Chilean, attempts to make some progress with his talents, for he has too many. Hermann becomes friends with Juan, Juan kisses Clarissa and Hermann loses all of his worldly possessions to Frau Moretti. He becomes sick for the first time away from home.

Evelyne Cerphal, the girl with the deep voice, loses her father and starts out to look for her mother, who is presumed to be dead. She ends up in Fraülein Cerphal's villa in Schwabing, named Fuchsbau ("foxhole"), and sees a film première of some young filmmakers. Hermann, Clarissa and Juan are jealous and hurt each other's feelings. Evelyne meets Ansgar Herzsprung.

Ansgar and Evelyne become inseparable, and Olga Müller shoots at Ansgar to try to kill her love. Clarissa wins a cello competition, playing a piece written by Hermann, and Hermann is overshadowed by her and suffers because of it. Ansgar points out his parents to Evelyne, and suffers from self-doubt. An artists' party is celebrated during carnival and Ansgar dies in a tram accident.

Helga Aufschrey languishes, and she and Hermann see the Schwabing riots. Hermann is beaten by a policeman and flees Munich. He arrives in Helga's sleepy hometown, and becomes the dream man of three women.
6"Kennedy's Children"

Alex, the eternal philosopher, experiences the day of the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Fraülein Cerphal has a cherry tree chopped down. Hermann refuses to accept the dreams of Helga's. Clarissa refuses to have a child that could have two fathers. The young filmmakers have a falling-out; Hermann meets Waltraud Schneider ("Schnüsschen"); and the death of the American president rescues Helga from committing suicide.
7"Christmas Wolves"

Clarissa almost dies from complications after an abortion. Hermann performs his SPUREN concert ("Traces") and remains alone afterwards. Helga and Stefan Aufhauser realize that they can torture one another. Juan and Renate Leineweber bury their hopes. Christmas draws near and Hermann has to cling to Schnüsschen. Clarissa flees from the clinic and she, once again, misses the right moment with Hermann.
8"The Wedding"

Schnüsschen celebrates New Year's Eve in the Hunsrück, and resolves to marry soon. She and Hermann take care of the children of a girlfriend of hers and she demonstrates to him the advantages of a perfect household. Clarissa goes to Paris in order to play for a famous cello teacher. The wedding of Hermann and Schnüsschen turns into a party for all of their friends. Clarissa returns and goes to the wedding reception as everyone is already in despair. Juan attempts suicide.
9"The Eternal Daughter"

Fraülein Cerphal finds out that her father will die soon, and realises that Fuchsbau rightfully belongs to a Jewish family. Hermann and Schnüsschen do everything for their child and try to be happy. Clarissa returns from California and her cello breaks. Volkert becomes a great pianist and gets closer to Clarissa. Herr Cerphal dies and it is the end of an era.
10"The End Of The Future"

Reinhard Dörr returns from Mexico and finds Fuchsbau destroyed. He tries, together with Rob Stürmer, to depict the disappearance of the house in a film. Hermann composes a requiem for the villa and the friends have a fight on the construction site. Clarissa becomes a mother. Reinhard goes to Venice in order to write a screenplay, meets Esther Goldbaum there and drowns in the Ammersee.
11"Time Of Silence"

Rob meets Esther and develops a film technology. Esther visits Dachau concentration camp with her father and loses all trace of her mother. Hermann meets Consul Handschuh. Clarissa and Hermann attempt to come to grips with day-to-day life. Clarissa stops playing the cello. Hermann cheats on Clarissa, and he and Rob get lost in experiments. Helga becomes politically active on the New Left and fights with the artists. Rob loses his sight for a while during the première presentation of VariaVision.
12"A Time Of Many Words"

Stefan goes to Berlin to shoot his first film, and Helga interferes. Schnüsschen becomes a student late in life and has a "self-realization". Clarissa discovers singing with an American girlfriend. Hermann leaves Schnüsschen and flies to Katrin in Berlin. A Hollywood producer, unwittingly, pays for the whole revolt against Stefan. Hermann is confronted with the rubble of his past.
13"Art Or Life"

Hermann becomes the crown prince of Isarfilm, and the childless consul wants to make him a surrogate son. Hermann looks for advice from friends and can't find any of his friends anymore. Hermann follows Clarissa and finally finds her in Amsterdam. He experiences Clarissa's show Hexenpassion ("Witches' Passion") and spends a long night with her. He returns to his small town of Schabbach, in order to learn how to wait.
