List of FC Porto seasons

For details on the current season, see 2014–15 FC Porto season.

FC Porto is a Portuguese professional association football club based in Porto, which competes in the Primeira Liga. It was formed in 1893 as Foot-ball Club do Porto but only in 1906 it became an active and fully fledged football club.

The club's first competitive matches were played in 1910–11, in the Taça José Monteiro da Costa, a tournament between clubs from the north of Portugal (also known as North of Portugal Championship).[1] In August 1912, Porto co-founded the Porto Football Association, which became responsible for organising the regional championship.[2] In the 1921–22 season, the Campeonato de Portugal was created as the first nationwide competition, with the purpose of determining the Portuguese national champion from among the several regional champions.[3][4] In 1938–39, after four experimental seasons, the Primeira Liga was officially established as the national championship, replacing the Campeonato de Portugal, which was in turn converted into the Taça de Portugal, the main domestic cup.[3][5] As one of its founding members, Porto is also one of three clubs (along with Benfica and Sporting) never to have been relegated from the top flight of Portuguese football.[6]

Between 1911 and 1938, Porto won five editions of the Taça José Monteiro da Costa, 22 regional championships (20 of which won consecutively since 1918–19) and four Campeonato de Portugal titles (including the inaugural season). Porto had won the first unofficial edition of the Primeira Liga in 1934–35, and repeated that feat officially in 1938–39. The club defended the national title in the following season, but had to wait 16 years until winning the league again in the 1955–56 season. After a fourth league win in 1959, the club endured another 19 years without winning the championship, which included an all-time club low ninth place in 1969–70. Since incumbent president Pinto da Costa took office in 1982, Porto have experienced routine success in the Primeira Liga, winning it 20 times out of 32 – five of them in succession (1995–1999), a record in Portuguese football. They achieved their first double of league and cup in 1956 and repeated it six more times (1988, 1998, 2003, 2006, 2009, 2011).

Porto first participated in the European competitions in the 1956–57 season, when it competed in the second edition of the European Cup. The club reached its first European final in 1984 and achieved their first European title three years later, in the 1986–87 European Cup. The following season, Porto collected the UEFA Super Cup and Intercontinental Cup, and in 2002–03 they won their first UEFA Cup, becoming the first and, so far, only Portuguese team to have won these three international trophies.

As of 2014, Porto have won 74 senior football titles: 27 Primeira Liga, 16 Taça de Portugal (plus 4 editions of the defunct Campeonato de Portugal), 20 Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira (record holder), 2 European Cup/UEFA Champions League, 2 UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League, 1 UEFA Super Cup and 2 Intercontinental Cup.[7]

Notes

  1. Before the official establishment of the Primeira Liga as the primary national championship, in the 1938–39 season, the Taça de Portugal was called Campeonato de Portugal (English: Championship of Portugal) and its winners were declared the national champions.[3]
  2. Only goals scored in the regional championship or Primeira Liga are considered.
  3. The club refused to give players to a game between the regional teams of Porto and Lisbon, so the Football Association of Porto barred their entry in the Campeonato de Portugal.[19]
  4. After four experimental editions, the Primeira Liga was officially established as a national league competition with the purpose of determining the national champions, thus replacing the Campeonato de Portugal, which was converted into the Taça de Portugal, the top domestic cup competition.
  5. The Cup was not organized in the 1946–47 season due to overscheduling caused by the major changes of the football league system.
  6. The Cup was not organized in the 1949–50 season because the Estádio Nacional was the host venue for the Latin Cup.
  7. Starting this season, league wins became worth 3 points, instead of the traditional 2 points.
  8. Porto saw six points subtracted in the Apito Dourado bribery allegations, reducing their 20-point lead (total 75 points) to 14. But on May 2011, the Central Administrative Court of the South of Portugal ruled that decision, taken in 2008 on a controversial meeting made by the Justice Council of the Portuguese Football Federation, as being "inexistent". The Portuguese Football Federation has announced it would appeal from this decision the Administrative Supreme Court.
